Viks vs. Hunger

After supporting CureDuchenne, voter registration, wildfire relief, and social justice this fall, PSU Athletics is pleased to introduce Viks vs. Hunger — presented by OnPoint Community Credit Union. This holiday season, we are raising funds and awareness for the PSU Food Pantry and the growing issue of food insecurity among college students. Through December 20th, OnPoint Community Credit Union will donate $4 for every $1 donated, up to $10,000.

By the Numbers

After campus closure due to COVID, the PSU Food Pantry adapted its operations to remain open as a critical service for students. And with COVID-related disruptions to the food supply chain, the PSU Food Pantry has needed to purchase more food than was formerly available for free. We must step up to take care of our community in places where social systems have failed them. No one should be hungry in Portland. Everyone has a right to access food and go to school. Students shouldn't have to choose between their textbooks and their next meal. Your donations allow the PSU Food Pantry to purchase healthy brain foods for studying and to support a variety of dietary and cultural needs.

  • In a Fall 2019 survey, 47% of PSU students reported experiencing food insecurity in the 30 days prior.
  • The rate for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) PSU students was 66.4%.
  • These rates are higher than the national average for four-year colleges in 2019, which was only 33%.
  • A one-dollar donation equals 10 meals (or in this case, 40 meals thanks to OnPoint!)
  • During Spring 2020, the PSU Food Pantry saw a 333% increase in the percentage of new visitors over the previous spring.
