FARMINGTON, Utah — With a 41-yard field goal as time expired, Portland State kicker Joshua Hossmann Lees delivered a 44-41 victory over Weber State Saturday – the Vikings' first under head coach Chris Fisk. The game-winning kick also netted Hossmann Lees Big Sky Conference and Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week honors Monday, while he was also named one of three Fred Mitchell Award Kickers of the Week.
 
At the conference level, Hossmann Lees becomes the Vikings' first player of the week of any kind since Dante Chachere was twice named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week in 2024. He's the program's first special teams honoree since Gianna Smith in 2023.
 
The junior kicker earned the honor after going 3-for-3 on field goals and 5-for-5 on PATs. In addition to his 41-yard game-winner, Hossmann Lees hit a career-long 42-yard field goal in the third quarter, as well as a 31-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter. He also had six of his eight kickoffs go for touchbacks.
 
He now ranks tied for fourth in the Big Sky Conference in both field goals made per game (1.2) and field goal percentage (.750) this season.
 
Saturday's win marked the first time the Vikings won a game on the final play since 2005. Coincidentally, that was another 44-41 Portland State victory on another last-second field goal, as the Vikings beat a Montana State team ranked ninth nationally that season. Eric Azorr hit a 40-yarder to win that game in 2005. Twenty-one years later, Hossmann Lees added a yard and delivered another victory.
 
The Vikings will relish in the victory while idle this week. They'll next play Oct. 10 when they host Utah Tech for a 1:05 p.m. kickoff.
