Following his star turn in a pair of overtime wins on the road last week, Portland State guard
Jaylin Henderson has been named the Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Henderson led the Vikings to a road sweep of Weber State and Idaho State in dramatic fashion. The Vikings trailed by seven at halftime in Ogden before beating the Wildcats in overtime, 95-90. Two days later, PSU trailed Idaho State by 17 points with 15 minutes to play. The Vikings roared back to win 93-87 in overtime.
For his part Henderson scored a career-high 34 points in the win at Weber State. He scored six points in the final minute of regulation, including a driving shot with two seconds left to tie the game. In overtime, Henderson scored nine more points to lead the Vikings to victory. He added six rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a blocked shot in the win.
At Idaho State, Henderson scored 19 more points with six rebounds and seven assists. He starred in overtime once again with five points and three assists.
For the weekend, Henderson averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, had three steals and two blocked shots while playing every minute of both games.
This is the second Big Sky Player of the Week honor in Henderson's career.
Henderson's teammate,
Terri Miller Jr., had a weekend just as big averaging 27.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and shooting .710 from the field, while making 6-9 three-pointers. Miller hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in the game at Idaho State to tie it and send it to overtime.
Both players were Preseason All-Big Sky Conference selections. Miller leads the league in scoring (19.3), while Henderson is third (18.5), and second in assists (6.2) and steals (2.0).
Portland State (8-5, 2-0) begins a home stand at Viking Pavilion this Saturday against Sacramento State. Tip-off is 2 p.m. PSU will play three straight games at home, and six of the next eight.
