BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State women's tennis team faced a tough task on Monday morning, hosting a 15-win Sacramento State squad in its final home match of the season, falling 7-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
With the loss, Portland State dropped to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Despite the setback, the Vikings remain in the hunt for a Big Sky Tournament spot with a few weeks of league play still to go. Sacramento State improved to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Sky with the win.
The Vikings honored their lone senior, team captain and four-year player Nika Beukers, following the match. Beukers opened her final home dual by earning a doubles win alongside Kasumi Hirayama at the No. 1 spot. The pair notched a 6-2 victory over Irene Riva and Maddy Ferreros, but the Hornets responded with 6-2 and 6-4 wins on the other two courts to take the opening point.
Sacramento State went on to sweep singles play in straight sets across all six courts to seal the victory.
Portland State has two road matches remaining on its regular season schedule. The Vikings will travel north for a non-conference contest at Gonzaga on Saturday, April 12, followed by a key Big Sky matchup at Eastern Washington on Sunday, April 13. The Big Sky Championship, which features the top six teams at the conclusion of the regualr season, is set for April 24–26 in Phoenix, Ariz.
