Ogden, UT – A Blaise Threatt 20-footer tinkled the twine with one second remaining to complete the comeback for Weber State as the Wildcats defeated Portland State, 60-58, at Dee Events Center.
Â
Threat scored 12 of the final 18 points for WSU as it rallied from a 49-38 deficit with under seven minutes to play in the game. The senior point guard finished with a game-high 27 points, splashing the game-winner under pressure.
Â
It was a lost weekend for Portland State as they also dropped a game at Idaho State on Thursday night. PSU's record fell to 16-12 on the season. The Vikings are 8-7 in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
The Vikings only had eight healthy players for the Saturday matinee with the Wildcats. But those eight, despite a lack of size and some spotty shooting, fared well most of the way with solid defense. PSU led for more than 36 minutes of the game.
Â
Terri Miller Jr. posted 14 points and matched his career-high with 11 rebounds.
Jaylin Henderson added 14 points, and
Qiant Myers scored 10 points with five assists.
Â
A pair of three-pointers by
Cole Farrell and Henderson got the Vikings off to a fast start. PSU was up 10-3 and eventually 20-9 in the first half. But a seven-minute scoreless stretch allowed the Wildcats to stay close. WSU went on an 11-0 run and tied the game with 3:23 left in the half.
Â
After starting the game 6-7 from the field, the Vikings made only 4-19 for the remainder of the half. However, they never trailed and finally got to halftime with a 26-23 lead. PSU was 10-26 shooting (.385) while Weber State was only 9-29 (.310).
Â
Weber State got its first lead at 29-28 on a layup by Threatt. The Vikings responded with a 10-2 run to get back in control. The rally featured driving dunks by Farrell, Miller and Henderson.
Â
Soon, Weber State pulled back within 39-38. The Vikings followed with another 10 points in a row, holding the Wildcats without a point for five minutes and 39 seconds. That brought PSU back to a 49-38 lead and 6:34 remained in the game.
Â
Again, Weber State was able to reel the Vikings back in. And the comeback was led by Threatt. After starting the game 0-7 from the field, he made 12-17 shots the rest of the way.
Â
Weber State went ahead 58-56 with 1:14 to play in the game on a three-point play by Alex Tew. After the teams traded empty possessions, Henderson rebounded for the Vikings and was able to hit a driving shot with 12 seconds left, tying the game at 58-58.
Â
Threatt then brought the ball up court and played for the last shot. He was heavily contested by
Isaiah Johnson as he pulled up from the top of the free throw circle. Slightly falling away, Threatt's jump shot drew all net.
Â
Having to go the length of the court in one second the Vikings were unable to respond.
Â
Portland State shot 23-55 from the field (.418), 6-24 from three-point range (.250) and were only 6-14 at the free throw line (.429). The Wildcats were similar at 23-56 (.411), 3-16 (.188) and 11-17 (.647). Rebounding was virtually even with Weber State leading 35-34.
Â
Despite the loss, PSU will be no worse than tied for third when they come home for their three final regular season games next week.
Â
Weber State had lost four games in a row, but the win boosted the Wildcats to 10-19 on the season, 4-11 in the Big Sky.
