Five members of the Portland State Football team have earned post-season honors from the Big Sky Conference as the league released its All-Conference awards today.
Cornerback
Carsten Mamaril was named second team All-Big Sky for the Vikings. Honorable mention selections were defensive end
Spencer Elliott, safety
Isaiah Green, tight end
Kristian Ingman and kick returner
Cru Newman. Voting was done by league coaches.
Maramil, a 5-9, 180-pound junior from Temecula, CA, proved to be one of the top defensive backs in the Big Sky this season. He led the Vikings with three interceptions and 10 pass breakups while making 30 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Mamaril was named FCS National Defensive Player of the Week following a Nov. 1 win at Cal Poly. He had two interceptions, three pass breakups and two tackles in that game. He tied for third in the Big Sky for total passes defended (13).
Elliott, a 6-3, 245-pound junior from Bend, OR, was the Vikings' top defensive lineman. He made 42 tackles and led the team with 12 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Elliott also forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble and had a pass breakup. He ranked fifth in the Big Sky in tackles for loss and sixth in sacks.
Green, a 6-1, 185-pound sophomore from Oxnard, CA, was Portland State's leading tackler with 101 on the season. That ranked third in the Big Sky. Green added four tackles for loss, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. Green made a season-high 15 tackles at BYU.
Ingman, a 6-5, 235-pound sophomore from Reno, NV, took over as the Vikings' starting tight end and was a productive receiver. Ingman was fourth on the team with 23 receptions for 342 yards, an average of 14.9 yards per catch. He was also the team's part-time long snapper and had three tackles and a fumble recovery on special teams.
Newman, a 6-foot, 185-pound redshirt freshman form Portland's Central Catholic High School, was the Vikings' top all-purpose performer. A converted quarterback, he made 35 kick returns for 651 yards. Newman added 29 receptions for 302 yards and 12 rushes for 70 yards. His 1,041 all-purpose yards led the team. In a game against Weber State, Newman returned five kicks for 91 yards, completed one pass attempt for five yards, rushed twice for 12 yards, caught three passes for 50 yards and even made a tackle.
