Portland, OR - Portland State didn't trail for a single second on Thursday night in a 74-56 win over Weber State. In fact, the Vikings haven't trailed at home in their last 82 minutes of play at Viking Pavilion.
The result is a 3-0 Big Sky Conference home record and 4-2 in league play overall. That has the Vikings in third place one-half game behind Montana one-third of the way through the Big Sky season.
Moreover, the Vikings have continued to play well and are winners in eight of their last 10 games. That has them at 12-7 overall this season.
The constant in the 10-game run has been defense, holding opponents under 60 points with 37% shooting during that span. The Vikings held Weber State, a team averaging 75.2 points, nearly 20 points under their average. The Wildcats managed only .352 shooting as the Vikings blocked eight shots.
"We have really good individual defenders and we are trying to put them in good positions defensively," said Head Coach
Jase Coburn. "Our guys are versatile and we can get the matchups we want."
The Vikings can score too, averaging 79 points this season.
All five Viking starters scored in double figures against Weber State, making major contributions.
Jaylin Henderson and
Isaiah Johnson each had a team-high 14 points. Henderson added six rebounds and five assists while Johnson was 6-8 from the field.
Tre-Vaughn Minott matched career highs with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and tallied 13 points on 6-9 from the field. Also scoring 13 points was
Qiant Myers, on 6-8 shots, and he handed out eight assists.
Terri Miller Jr. scored 12 points with six rebounds.
"It was a complete team win. I'm really proud of our effort. Everybody has embraced their role. And aytime you can lead wire-to-wire that's great," said Coburn.
Johnson led the Vikings to a hot start with five quick points and a chase-down blocked shot on a Wildcat fast break. The Vikings held WSU scoreless for five minutes and raced out in front 12-0.
After missing their first seven shots, the Wildcats found the range and were able to stay in the game through the first half. WSU closed within four points on a pair of occasions but PSU got to halftime with a 39-29 lead. Minott did the most damage with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks before the break.
PSU shot 17-29 (.586) in the first half and out-rebounded Weber State, 18-14, while holding the Wildcats to 10-27 shooting (.370).
The second half was all Vikings as Weber State struggled to keep the deficit under double digits.
A 1-3-1 zone the Wildcats threw at the Vikings slowed them offensively… for a brief time. PSU was up by at least 10 points for the final 10 minutes of the contest.
The Vikings are now 7-1 at home this season, having won five straight games at The Ship. They have won six straight Big Sky home games dating to last season.
Weber State got a strong performance from Blaise Threatt. The senior guard had 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He was the only Wildcat in double figures.
WSU is now 7-13 on the season, 1-5 in Big Sky play.
GAME NOTES
- Shane Nowell had a strong game off the bench with six points, seven rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes of action.
- Tre-Vaughn Minott is shooting .795 from the field in league play (31-39), .723 for the season.
- Portland State dominated the glass, 43-30, and scored 50 points in the paint, compared to only 18 for WSU.
- Portland State had six more dunks in the game, increasing their school record total to 92 in only 19 games.
- The Vikings were without Hayden Curtiss for a third straight game due to a sprained ankle.
