Vikings Fall to Oregon in Season Opener

EUGENE, Ore. - The Portland State women's tennis team opened its 2025 season Friday afternoon against the University of Oregon, falling 4-0 to the Ducks on their home court at the Student Tennis Center.

Friday's matchup was the 14th meeting between the programs and served as the season opener for both teams. The Ducks, now 1-0 on the year, claimed the doubles point over the Vikings (0-1) before securing three consecutive singles victories to clinch the dual at 4-0.

The Vikings, debuting three first-time doubles pairings, secured a doubles victory but failed to claim a second one as the Ducks secured the opening point. After a 6-1 Oregon victory on court one, Hana Abdelhamid and Scarlett Perkins shifted the momentum with a standout performance at line two, defeating Tilde Jagare and Marjorie Sstouza 6-3 to even the score. In an effort to clinch the opening point for PSU, the freshman duo of Ayra Salim and Kasumi Hirayama impressed in their collegiate debuts, pushing Avery Jennings and Julia Visaya before narrowly falling 6-4 on court three.

Despite their doubles loss, Salim and Hirayama proved resilient, both coming back stronger in singles play. Hirayama posted a convincing 6-2 win in the opening set over Bridget Mihulka on court five. Meanwhile, on court six, Salim clawed her way to a 7-6 (4) victory in her first set against Juliet Santitto. Unfortunately, the Ducks proved too much for the Vikings on courts two, three, and four, claiming three consecutive straight-set wins to clinch the match at 4-0, leaving the remaining matches unfinished. Along with Salim and Hirayama, who both held a one-set lead, senior captain Nika Beukers was also forced to abandon her match as she trailed 6-4, 5-1 to Marjorie Souza at line one.

The Vikings will look to build on those positive set results when they return to action tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 18) in a neutral-site, non-conference matchup against Montana. First serve between the Griz and the Vikings is set for 10:00 a.m. at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.
