Vikings Notch 4-1 Road Win at Art U

DALY CITY, Calif. – The Portland State women's tennis team returned to action Thursday afternoon in California, defeating the Academy of Art 4-1 on the road at the Bay Club South San Francisco.

The Vikings, now 2-2, spoiled Art U's season opener by winning the doubles point and three singles matches to defeat the Urban Knights (0-1).

"Today we faced a lot of pressure and had to fight our way through it," Momoko Yoshimura said after the win. "I'm proud of how we handled the pressure and came away with the win."

Keeping in line with the season's pattern thus far, PSU's doubles lineup featured two new pairings on Thursday. Yoshimura and Scarlett Perkins showed no signs of unfamiliarity despite making their debut as a duo, rolling to a 6-2 victory over Jessica Plazas and Estelle Najean at line two. Returning to the court for the first time since the season opener, Capu Sanoner teamed up with Maddie Egan on court three to clinch the opening point with a 6-3 win over Viktoria Leth and Georgiana Parr.

In singles play, Yoshimura improved to 2-2 on the season with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Leth at No. 4. Closely emulating Yoshimura's performance, Egan notched a 6-2, 6-3 line-six victory over Parr to pull the Vikings within a match of victory. Makoto Ohara finished things off at the three spot for PSU, rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 match-clinching win over Estelle Najean. Art U's Amelija Supulniece topped Elizabeth Strongina 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to secure the Urban Knights' only point of the day. The matches of Perkins and Nika Beukers went unfinished.

Ohara's singles victory was the 31st of her Viking career, placing her second on the program's all-time singles wins list. She now leads the Vikings with a 3-1 record this season.

The Vikings face a quick turnaround as they prepare for action tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 2) against Santa Clara. The match is slated for 11 a.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center.
