SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Portland State volleyball team aimed to extend their undefeated start in Big Sky play, but Sacramento State had other plans, sweeping the Vikings 3-0 on Friday evening.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 3-11 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky action, while the Hornets improved to 10-6 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Sacramento State dominated offensively, hitting .421 over three sets, including a match-high .462 in set two. The Vikings struggled to keep up, managing just a .105 hitting percentage and tallying 30 kills, their second-lowest kill total of the season.

The teams traded points early in the match, with four ties in the first 12 points. However, after a 6-6 deadlock, the Hornets surged ahead with 10 straight points, securing a 25-14 win in the opening set.

Despite the Hornets' impressive offensive display in set two, the Vikings pushed them throughout, keeping the score tied at 9-all midway through. But Sacramento State regained control, holding a steady lead before closing out the set 25-19 for a 2-0 advantage.

Looking to complete the sweep, Sacramento State jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the third set. The Vikings fought back, pulling within six points on three occasions, but the Hornets pulled away again, mirroring their first-set win, 25-15, to clinch the match.

Reigning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week Carisa Barron led the Vikings with 11 kills, marking her third consecutive match with double-digit kills. Ella Hartford added a team-high 26 assists and seven digs, while Reese Biedermeier led with four blocks. The Vikings tallied three service aces compared to the Hornets' seven.

Portland State will look to bounce back when they return home to host Northern Colorado on Thursday, Oct. 10 at Viking Pavilion (7:00 p.m. PT).
