Kansas City, MO – One thing is certain. The Kansas City Roos play well at home. The Summit League opponent left no doubt on Saturday evening as it rolled over Portland State, 83-67, at Swinney Center.
Â
The Roos are a modest 7-10 on the season, but now a perfect 6-0 at home. And it's no fluke. Kansas City knocked off defending Summit champion Oral Roberts at home last week by 17 points.
Â
Portland State fell to 10-5 with the loss in its final non-conference game of the season.
Â
KJ Allen led the Vikings with 16 points, 10 rebounds and three assists. He was 6-12 from the field and 4-6 at the free throw line, logging his third double-double of the season. However, PSU made only 21-59 shots as a team for a .356 mark, and were beaten on the glass, 41-37, by the Roos.
Â
Kansas City's Allen David Mukeba had a game-high 18 points to lead all scorers, hitting 8-11 from the field. Jamar Brown scored 11 points with 10 rebounds.
Â
The Roos were 31-65 shooting overall (.477) and shooting was the key factor. It was a 13-12 game when the Roos broke out on an 11-0 run. A four-minute Viking scoring drought had the Roos on top 24-12.Â
Â
KC raced out to a 20-point lead by the end of the first half, 48-28, as PSU allowed its most points in a half this season. The Roos were 20-34 from the field (.588) and 6-11 from three-point range (.545).Â
Â
The Vikings had a forgettable half. Portland State had the double trouble of too many turnovers (9) combined with poor shooting (8-28, .286). Kansas City had a lot to do with that, blocking seven Viking shots.
Â
Portland State showed signs of life early in the second half. Allen sparked the Vikings to a 15-4 run, scoring nine points in the first five minutes. Moreover, the Vikings got Kansas City in foul trouble. PSU was in the bonus from the 13:27 mark of the second half. However, the closest the Vikings could get was a 52-43 deficit, and they never took full advantage of the foul situation.
Â
Kansas City got its lead back to double digits and it stayed there for the remainder of the game. The Roos had 46 points from bench players while the Vikings got only 18 points off their bench.
Â
Jorell Saterfield (11 points, 7 rebounds) and
Ismail Habib (10 points) were the only other Vikings to score in double figures. Freshman
Cole Farrell had a season-high nine points.
