STANFORD, Calif. — Already holding the school record and a likely qualifying mark for the NCAA West Prelims in the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Jordan MacIntosh had the luxury of taking a big swing Friday as the lone Viking competing at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
He certainly did that, charging to the front with a 67-second lap to complete the first kilometer of the race. MacIntosh still led the field with three laps to go, but eventually fell back to sixth in his section with a time of 8:41.38.
MacIntosh's time didn't better the 8:39.01 he ran at the Stanford Invitational three weeks earlier. Nor did it better his school record of 8:35.44 from last summer's Bell Canadian Track & Field Championships.
But the goal Friday was more for MacIntosh to fine-tune his racing form ahead of what he and the Vikings' coaches hope is a deep postseason run. MacIntosh's time at the Stanford Invitational still ranked him third in the NCAA west region coming into Friday. That all but assures him of qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims at the end of May, where he'll then have a chance to race his way to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 7-10, in Austin, Texas.
So, while MacIntosh's big swing Friday may not have paid off, it still set up what everyone hopes is a big final seven weeks of the season for the Vikings' school record holder.
