LEWISTON, Idaho – The Portland State women's tennis team claimed its 10th win of the season in a 5-2 victory over Idaho on Friday at the LCSC Tennis Courts. Securing a spot in the Big Sky Conference tournament later this month, the Vikings improved to 10-11 overall and 4-3 in conference play, notching the program's first 10-win season since 2014.Â
"I am extremely proud of our team today," fifth-year senior
Nell Arendt said. "Nika and I came out strong in doubles and it was a huge team effort today. As a fifth year, this means a lot and I'm very excited to finish the regular season in a great position, and to prepare well for the conference tournament."
Following a Vandal win to open doubles play, Arendt and
Nika Beukers kept the Vikings alive with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
Masha Ponomareva and
Capu Sanoner sealed the opening point for Portland State on court one, topping Annabel Davis and Lena Beckx 6-4 to improve to 11-0 on the year.
Ponomareva put the Vikings up 2-0 with her third straight win at No. 1 singles, defeating Davis 6-3, 6-3 to open singles play. After the Vandals responded with a pair of wins on courts two and four,
Elizabeth Strongina brought the momentum back to the Vikings with her fourth straight victory at the No. 3 position, storming back to beat Rachelle Starreveld 3-6, 2-6, 2-6.
Makoto Ohara and Arendt finished things off for Portland State, securing the final two matches of the afternoon. Ohara cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Selin Sepken at the No. 5 spot, while Arendt battled her way to a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Beckx on court six.
The Vikings will look to finish the regular season with an undefeated weekend as they head to Cheney, Wash. for the regular season finale against Eastern Washington this Sunday, April 16 (11 a.m.). Â
