Portland State Football has completed its 2023 schedule with the addition of a non-conference game against North American University, an NAIA school located in Stafford, TX.
 
The Vikings will play a traditional 11-game schedule in 2023, featuring two FBS opponents and a rigorous eight-game Big Sky Conference slate that includes defending Big Sky Conference co-Champion and NCAA semifinalist Montana State. The Vikings will host Montana, also an NCAA playoff team in 2022, and Dam Cup rival Eastern Washington among other games. The Vikings have five games at home and six on the road in 2023.
 
Portland State opens with a formidable FBS opponent in the University of Oregon (10-3 in 2022) on Sept. 2. The Vikings have never beaten the Ducks in five previous meetings. PSU then travels to the University of Wyoming (7-6) on Sept. 9 for a first-ever meeting with the Cowboys out of the Mountain West Conference.
 
PSU's home schedule begins at Hillsboro Stadium on Sept. 16 against North American (3-8). The Vikings follow with another home game, their Big Sky Conference opener, against Cal Poly (2-9/1-7 Big Sky) on Sept. 23. PSU hopes to avenge a 49-42 road loss to the Mustangs last season.
 
It will be important to take advantage of those home dates as PSU does not return home for the span of four weeks. The Vikings will meet national semifinalist Montana State (12-2/8-0) on Sept. 30 in their first trip to Bozeman since 2017.
 
Oct. 7 will be Portland State's bye, then the Vikings go on another long trip, playing at Northern Arizona (3-8/2-6) on Oct. 14. The Vikings beat the Lumberjacks last season, 35-27.
 
PSU finally returns to Hillsboro Stadium for back-to-back games on Oct. 21 and Oct. 28. Idaho State (1-10/1-7) comes to town in the first of those two games. The Vikings won the most recent meeting, 31-10 in 2021, also at Hillsboro Stadium.
 
Portland State also beat Eastern Washington (3-8/2-6) in the most recent matchup between the Dam Cup rivals last year in Cheney, 38-35. PSU puts possession of the Dam Cup Trophy on the line on Oct. 28.
 
Portland State and UC Davis (6-5/5-3) square off for the first time in four seasons on Nov. 4. It is also PSU's first game in Davis since 2016.
 
The Vikings' regular season home finale is Nov. 11 against Montana (8-5/4-4). It is the Griz' first trip to town since 2019. The Vikings will try to end a three-game losing streak to the 2022 playoff participant.

Snow may be a factor in game 11 as Portland State will play at Northern Colorado (3-8/2-6). The Vikings beat the Bears, 35-21, last season at Hillsboro. PSU has not played a game in Greeley since 2019.

SCHEDULE NOTES

• This will be the 77th season of Portland State football (1947) and 28th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference.
• PSU faces five teams in 2023 that were on the schedule in 2022 (Cal Poly, Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington, Montana, Northern Colorado)… PSU plays eight of 11 possible Big Sky opponents. The Vikings will miss Weber State, Sacramento State and Idaho in 2023.
• The two FBS-level programs are Oregon and Wyoming. PSU is 4-44 all-time when playing "up" against FBS programs. Wins have come over Hawai'i (2000), New Mexico (2006), Washington State (2015) and North Texas (2015)… this marks the ninth consecutive season that Portland State has played two FBS opponents. PSU has done so a total of 13 times, including three in 2006.
• Portland State is playing one lower division program in 2023, NAIA North American University. The Vikings are 20-0 in games against lower division opponents since moving to Division I in 1996.
• Portland State opponents were a combined 59-74 last season.
