CLACKAMAS, Ore. — A pair of Vikings opened the 2023 outdoor season for the Portland State track & field team Friday, as
Gabrielle Bartlett and
Ahliah Nordstrom competed on the first day of the L&C Spring Break Open out at Clackamas Community College.
Bartlett set the first top 10 mark of the outdoor season with her performance in the women's pole vault. She opened at a height of 9-10 (3.00m), missing on her first attempt before clearing on her second. It was the same story over the next two bars, before she missed on all three attempts at what would have been a school record of 11-03.75 (3.45m). Bartlett's last clearance came at 10-10 (3.30m), moving her up to third all time in the event at Portland State.
Bartlett, whose personal best from her time at Lane Community College stands at 12-08.75 (3.88m), will get another chance at the school record Saturday when she competes at the Oregon Preview.
Nordstrom, meanwhile, improved her mark in the hammer by close to 16 feet, as she threw 126-04.00 (38.51m) on her fifth attempt of the day. That put her just outside of the all-time top 10, as the current No. 10 mark in the PSU record books stands at 128-11 (39.30m), just over two and a half feet farther than Nordstrom's best mark Friday.
Like Bartlett, Nordstrom will also get to compete again Saturday, albeit in different events than the hammer. Nordstrom is entered in both the discus and shot put on the second day of the L&C Spring Break Open, which shifts over to the Eldon Fix Track on the campus of Lewis & Clark College Saturday. It's there where more of the Vikings will open up officially, as the outdoor season gets underway in earnest.
