Comeback Win by Egan Lifts Vikings Past North Dakota

BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State women's tennis team beat North Dakota in epic fashion on Wednesday, pulling off a 4-3 win in a four-hour dual at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The Vikings improved to 6-8 overall, while the Fighting Hawks dropped to 6-9.

A three-set comeback win by Maddie Egan at No. 6 singles was the clincher for the Vikings. In a match that lasted nearly 3.5 hours, the junior battled back from a first-set loss and a 5-3 deficit in set two, to eventually defeat North Dakota's Angela Georgieva, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

"Being able to fight back in the second set with my teammates at my side felt really good," Egan said. "After pulling off the tiebreaker in that second set, I knew I had to carry that momentum into the third set. It was a lot of fun. I'm glad I could battle it out and get my first clinch win for the team."

The Vikings opened the day with a pair of doubles wins to claim the opening point. Playing together for the first time this season, Egan and Capu Sanoner cruised to a 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. Nika Beukers and Elizabeth Strongina did the same at No. 2, defeating Nyah Kauders Nore Heinitz. Sanoner's victory marked her 33rd career individual doubles win, which tied the program's all-time record set by Megan Govi in 2015.

Also earning wins in singles action for the Vikings were Strongina and Beukers. Beukers defeated Nore Heinitz 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, while Strongina topped Sapir Sela, 6-4 6-2.

The Vikings will return to action this Saturday, March 18 for their final home match of the season. They'll take on Sacramento State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (11 a.m.).
