Portland, OR – It's no wonder Eastern Washington has won so many games in a row. The Eagles rarely miss a shot. That said, Eastern needed just about every one of those shots to fall to stay ahead of the Vikings as they beat Portland State, 98-88, at Viking Pavilion.
Â
It was the 14th win a row for Eastern Washington - which is the longest Division I winning streak in the nation. The Eagles remain in first place in the Big Sky Conference at 12-0, and are 18-7 on the season.
Â
Portland State battled and had leads in both the first and second half, but found it difficult to match the Eagles shot for shot despite having its highest scoring output since November. Eastern Washington shot exactly .667 from the field in both the first and second halves and finished the game 34-51 overall.
Â
"We played hard and battled for 40 minutes. We couldn't get key stops when we needed to get them. We scored tonight but we couldn't get the stops we needed," said Viking Coach
Jase Coburn.
Â
The Eagles remarkable shooting came just two days after shooting .646 from the field in a win at Sacramento State.
Â
The Vikings were 30-68 from the field (.441), but only 7-29 from three-point range (.241). They stayed close by forcing turnovers (17 by EWU) and committing few of their own (7). PSU had 12 steals in the game.
Â
PSU drops to 10-14 with the loss, 4-7 in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
Senior guard
Cameron Parker scored a career-high 29 points, handed off 10 assists and also made a career-high five steals.
Jorell Saterfield scored 16 points, and
Hunter Woods scored nine with nine rebounds for the Vikings.
Â
Eastern Washington was blazing from the very start. Their first four shots were three-pointers and all four went splash. Then a Casey Jones dunk made it 14-6 Eagles with a little more than two minutes gone. That had the Vikings playing from behind most of the first half.Â
Â
The Eagles kept hitting shots - 18-27 in the half (.667), but so did the Vikings - 17-34 (.500). Eventually, Saterfield hit a tying three-pointer, then a Parker free throw gave the Vikings their first lead at 33-32 with 6:52 left in the first half.Â
Â
Eastern kept knocking down shots though. A 10-1 run pushed the Eagles back to a 42-34 lead.
Â
After the early three-point barrage, Eastern Washington did most of its damage inside, scoring 26 points in the paint in the first half on the way to a 47-43 lead.
Â
Parker had 13 points and six assists at halftime for the Vikings. Tyreese Davis had 13 points for the Eagles.
Â
PSU had the lead back briefly at 52-49 early in the second half. Again, the Eagles rallied with a 16-4 burst over the next five minutes.
Â
Eastern Washington got the lead to double digits with 9:45 to play and it stayed there for most of the rest of the game, though the largest lead only went to 14.
