Wildcats Keep PSU Offense Under Control, Hand Vikings 65-57 Loss

Portland, OR – Weber State set the pace and Portland State couldn't break it. The Wildcats methodical approach slowed down a recently-hot Viking offense and led WSU to a 65-57 Big Sky Conference win at Viking Pavilion.

PSU had shot 57% from the field in each of the last two games - both wins - and was averaging 83.5 points over the last four games. The Vikings entered the games leading the Big Sky in scoring at 76.8 points per game. However, the combination of the Wildcats controlling tempo and a poor shooting night for the Vikings led to their second-lowest point total of the season.

The loss leaves the Vikings at 6-9 in Big Sky Conference play with three games remaining. They are now in a three-way tie for fifth place with Idaho State and Sacramento State. Now 10-5, Weber State hangs on to third place in the conference standings.

PSU shot 21-58 from the field (.362) and a mere 3-19 from three-point range (.158). The Wildcats came in at 24-53 from the field (.453) and 3-12 from distance (.250). The Wildcats had a big advantage on the backboards, winning that battle, 42-28.

Cameron Parker led all scorers with 25 points, making 8-15 from the field and 9-11 at the line. He added six assists for the Vikings. Isaiah Johnson was inserted into the starting lineup and produced 15 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Do-it-all Dillon Jones led the Wildcats with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. The All-Conference forward was the key to Weber State's half-court style that stalled out the Vikings.

Weber State led almost the entire first half and had held the Vikings to 19 points through 17 minutes. PSU trailed 27-19 but managed an eight-point rally in the final 2:41 to tie it at 27 at halftime.

The Wildcats got back on top early in the second half and never trailed the rest of the way. Remarkably, their largest lead was just five points until some free throws in the waning seconds pumped the advantage up to eight. Portland State's largest rally in the second half was just five points on back-to-back baskets early in the half.
