Vikings Take Care Of Business, Trounce Lewis & Clark, 104-60

Portland, OR – There was no major drama or theatrics at Viking Pavilion on Wednesday night. Just a fast-paced, high-scoring game in which heavily-favored Portland State took care of business, beating Lewis and Clark, 104-60. So… exactly what the Viking faithful was looking for.

Coming off their poorest shooting effort of the season at Washington State on Saturday, the Vikings had no trouble putting the ball in the basket against the Pioneers. PSU shot a season-high .581 from the field, hitting 43-74 from the field. It was a balance with eight three-point field goals and 64 points in the paint.

Junior center Hayden Curtiss got the start in the place of an ailing Kendall Munson and made the most of his opportunity. Curtiss posted career-highs of 19 points and seven rebounds while blocking five shots in only 22 minutes of playing time. Senior guard Keshaun Saunders had his PSU best of 15 points with three steals in 18 minutes. Senior guard Bobby Harvey scored 13 points in 15 minutes and senior forward Hunter Woods had 11 in 15 minutes.

The Vikings had a balanced attack as all 11 players available played at least 15 minutes each. All 11 scored and had at least one rebound while 10 players had assists.

Portland State improved to 7-2 on the season, matching the best nine-game record by a Viking team in school history, set six times previously. The Vikings are 3-0 at home, 3-1 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites.

Harvey came out of the blocks on fire, setting the tone for the night. He hit his first four shots, three of which were three-pointers and had 11 points in the first four minutes. That allowed the Vikings to lead the game from wire-to-wire. Remarkably, Jorell Saterfield had five rebounds and four assists over the same span, finding the open Harvey for jump shots.

Nate Berg kept the Pioneers in the game, at least for a while, also making three three-pointers in a row early on. By halftime Berg had 16 of Lewis and Clark's 31 points. But the Vikings, who shot well all night, built a 49-31 advantage by intermission.

PSU opened the second half on a 24-6 run and never looked back. Curtiss (10 points), Saunders (12) and Woods (11) dominated the half, combining to make 14-19 shots. They were 18-26 for the game (.692).

PSU out-rebounded the Division III Pioneers, 49-34, making 10 steals and blocking seven shots in all.

Berg did not score in the second half for Lewis and Clark (3-4), but had a team-high 16 for the game. Sam Henderson had seven points and seven rebounds.
