Vikings Dominant in 7-0 Sweep of Linfield

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team earned its first sweep of the season on Friday, defeating Linfield 7-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.

The Vikings improved to 3-1 on the year, adding to their best start since 2013. The Wildcats fell to 0-1.

"It was a super fun environment today having us and the men's team playing at the same time," Viking junior Maddie Egan said. "The crowd was great and you could feel the energy on and off the court. We're excited to get another win."

Portland State took the opening point, out-scoring the Wildcats 18-3 across three courts. Pairing up for the first time since the 2021 season, former First Team All-Big Sky duo Makoto Ohara and Capu Sanoner secured a 6-0 win over Taryn Fujimori and Lexie Matsunaga. Emily Rees and Nell Arendt clinched the point for the Vikings, winning 6-1 on court two. Egan and Elizabeth Strongina completed the sweep at the No. 3 position, topping Alexis Garner and Sarah Forester 6-2.

The Vikings were dominant in singles play, earning straight-set victories on all six courts. Rees (6-1, 6-1) and Strongina (6-2, 6-2) were the first to cash in for PSU, putting the Vikings on top 3-0. Playing at the No. 1 spot for just the second time in her career, Egan clinched the match for the Vikings, defeating Fujimori 6-4, 6-2.  A 6-0, 6-3 win from Nika Beukers at No. 4 and a pair of 6-0 sweeps from Arendt and Ohara at the five and six spots closed things out for Portland State.

The Vikings will return to action on Sunday at Washington (12 p.m.)
