PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Portland State women's tennis season came to a close on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Tournament, falling to No. 4 Sacramento State, 4-0 at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
The Vikings finished their 2022 campaign 8-12 overall and 3-5 in conference action. Thursday marked the Vikings fifth Big Sky Tournament appearance in program history.
"From top to bottom, our girls fought incredibly hard today," Head Coach
Kyle Russell said. "Every person in the lineup battled through the heat and gave us a chance to win the match. In the past, we've struggled to bounce back after losing the doubles point, but today we didn't show that weakness. It's a privilege to coach this group, and I'm proud of everything they've accomplished this year. The future is bright."
Sacramento State took the first point after winning No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, leaving the No. 1 match unfinished at 6-6.
The Vikings came out strong in singles action, gaining a one-set advantage on four of the six courts. The Hornets pulled themselves within two points of the clinch with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. As a result, they used the second sets to their advantage on the remaining courts, sending four of the five matches to a third set. Wins at No. 5 and No. 6 ultimately sealed the deal for Sacramento State, as the match ended at 4-0.Â
