BEAVERTON, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team kept its postseason hopes alive with a 5-2 victory over Eastern Washington on Sunday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center. After the match, the Vikings honored their lone senior, Jacinta Milenkoski.
"It felt very empowering knowing that this was my final home match," Milenkoski said. "I felt like myself and my team had different energy because everyone was trying to make it a special day for me which I really appreciated. I think I found a little extra fuel in the tank during my match because I had everyone watching and cheering me on."
The extra fuel helped Milenkoski push her match to a complete third set for the first time this season. After falling behind early, the senior pulled off a 7-5 win in the second set before being edged out 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3).
The Vikings took care of business in doubles action, grabbing two wins to claim the opening point. Capu Sanoner and Nika Beukers cruised past Yamin Mansouri and Isabella Foshee 6-1 at the top spot. Emily Rees and Mariajose Hernandez Coronado continued their dominance at No. 2, posting a 6-4 win over Renata Gabuzyan and Kenzington Mann. As a result of her doubles victory, Beukers tied the program's record for individual single-season doubles wins with 15.Â
The Eagles knotted the dual at one with a win at No. 6 to begin singles play before Beukers posted a straight-set win on court three for PSU. Sanoner fell behind at the No. 1 spot early but battled back to claim her match 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. After pushing through a close second set, Makoto Ohara won the clincher at No. 5, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
"I didn't know the dual score during my match," Ohara said. "It wasn't until after I won that my teammates told me I clinched it. I was really excited because it's my first clinch this season, and I'm happy I could help get a win for Jacinta on senior day."
After being pushed to a third set on court four, Rees pulled off a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 victory, securing PSU's final point of the day.Â
On April 16, the Vikings will head to Flagstaff to close out the regular-season schedule against Northern Arizona (2 p.m.).
