Portland, OR – The sixth-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs brought their "A" game on Thanksgiving evening, beating Portland State, 102-78, in the nightcap of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament at Memorial Coliseum.Â
Â
The Bulldogs got off to a torrid start, shooting better than 70% for much of the first half. They were 21-32 from the field in the first half (.656), including hitting eight three-pointers.Â
Â
PSU trailed only 30-22 at the 7:42 mark of the opening period. However, the Bulldogs went on a 20-3 run over the next five minutes with six different players scoring.
Â
Portland State's attempt to push the pace in the game created more possessions and the result was a 55-31 lead for Gonzaga at intermission.Â
Â
Despite the deficit, the Vikings kept pushing the tempo in the second half and it started to pay off. PSU trailed by 27 one minute into the half, but
Jorell Saterfield and
Cameron Parker's shooting sparked the Viking offense. Portland State trimmed the deficit to 16 on three occasions.Â
Â
In the end, Gonzaga had too much fire power. The Bulldogs made 38-63 from the field, a .603Â shooting percentage. They buried 12-24 three-point field goals.
Â
The Vikings were 26-61 from the field (.426), making 11-25 three-pointers (.440).Â
Â
"I thought we really competed and played hard," said Vikings Coach
Jase Coburn. "Gonzaga is a really good team, one of the best in the country. We had a bad stretch in the first half where they were scoring and we didn't. They are really good at exposing your mistakes on defense."
Â
Saterfield scored 16 of his team-high 21 points in the second half as the Vikings matched the Bulldogs, 47-47, in scoring. Saterfield made 5-8 three-pointers in the game.Â
Â
Parker added 16 points, with 13 coming in the second half on 5-5 from the field and 3-3 at the line. Parker also led the team with eight assists.Â
Â
The Bulldogs were led by the 23 points of Malachi Smith who hit 9-12 from the field and 5-5 three-pointers. All-American big man Drew Timme scored 18 points, hitting 7-8 from the field, and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
Â
