PORTLAND, Ore. — With what's sure to be a unique Portland State volleyball season fast approaching, the Vikings bolstered their depth at setter with the late addition of transfer
Ally Wada from the University of San Francisco Friday.
Â
Wada, who has been with the Vikings since the start of winter term, comes to the Vikings after playing two seasons for the Dons in the West Coast Conference. Wada started full-time for the Dons in 2019, when she ranked fourth in the WCC with 9.09 assists per set. Wada had two matches with 50 or more assists as a sophomore, including a 50-20 match against Gonzaga on Oct. 19, 2019 in which she recorded 50 assists and 22 digs in a 3-2 win.
Â
"We are very pleased to have Ally join our program," Portland State head volleyball coach
Michael Seemann said of Wada. "She has extensive experience running the floor as a Division I setter. Ally has a very good feel for hitters, and understands how to take care of her attackers. She's also a great defender, a key aspect for a setter that is often overlooked when evaluating the position.
Â
"She comes from a great family, and we are fortunate to have them become a part of our family at PSU."
Â
Wada originates from Aiea, Hawaii, where she competed in track & field and basketball for Hawaii Baptist Academy in addition to volleyball. Wada was named the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) D2 Player of the Year during her junior volleyball season, and was a PrepVolleyball.com High School All-American Honorable Mention coming out of high school. Wada was named the ILH D2 State Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player while leading her team to a D2 state title as a sophomore.
Â
Wada joins
Maddy Reeb as one of two setters on the Vikings' roster this season. The Vikings open Big Sky play Jan. 30-31 with back-to-back games against Northern Arizona at Viking Pavilion.
