Portland State Athletics has named
Kyle Nelson as its new Director of Sports Medicine. Nelson, who has a Masters Degree In Public Health from PSU, returns to the Park Blocks after nearly two decades in collegiate athletic training in the northwest.
Â
Nelson had been the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at Concordia University in Portland for the past seven years. He also spent six years as Head Athletic Trainer at University of Portland (2003-09) and three years at The Evergreen State College (2000-03). Nelson worked for Hope Orthopedics of Oregon from 2009-13. He developed and managed the athletic training program for Salem-Keizer School District while at Hope Orthopedics.
Â
Nelson replaces Jim Wallis, the former Director of Sports Medicine at PSU who recently retired after 31 years. Wallis mentored Nelson during his previous time at PSU.
Â
Nelson begins at Portland State on May 11. In addition to traditional athletic training duties, he will be instrumental in developing PSU's return to athletic activities protocol as the State and University phase the reopening plan following the impact of COVID-19.Â
Â
Earlier in April, Portland State named
Emily Kosderka to the Sports Medicine staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.
