Ogden, UT –
Rashaad Goolsby and
Lamar Hamrick combined for 34 points off the bench to lead the Portland State Vikings to their fourth win in a row, beating Weber State, 89-83, at Dee Events Center.
Â
Goolsby (18) and Hamrick (16) each posted career scoring highs as the Vikings turned in another strong offensive performance. PSU now has a season-best winning streak of four and has won three straight on the road. At 10-8 in the Big Sky Conference, the Vikings have moved into fourth place in the standings.
Â
Goolsby, a senior forward, hit 6-10 shots from the field, 6-6 at the line, including a pair of clutch free throws with 27 seconds left and the Vikings up by just two. He also led the Vikings with nine rebounds while playing 27 minutes off the bench. Hamrick, a senior guard, hit 6-13 from the field and 4-9 from three-point range. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 25 minutes of play.
Â
In all, the Vikings had five players score in double figures. Point guard
Holland Woods had 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. His two free throws with 10 seconds left put the nail in the Wildcats' coffin. Center
Sal Nuhu added 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Â
"I'm proud of the fact that we had five guys in double figures and another guy with nine," said Viking Coach
Barret Peery. "Everybody really contributed and scored."
Â
PSU's 89 points continued their upward surge offensively in the second half of the Big Sky season. The Vikings have averaged 88.8 points in their four-game winning streak. They have scored 81 or more in six straight games and eight of the last nine.
Â
"We've continued to score the ball well recently. Our defense has created so many opportunities with our pressure and that has made a difference," Peery said.
Â
"This has been a culmination of us getting healthy and stepping it up at both ends of the floor. Our defense continues to create big offense. We swept this trip and I was proud of our guys for doing it."
Â
The win at Weber State was the Vikings second straight in Ogden after a 76-75 thriller last season. PSU has only won four games at Dee Events since joining the Big Sky in 1996-97, two have come under the leadership of Peery.
Â
The first half was a back-and-forth battle as both offenses were productive. The Wildcats shot .514 from the field, while the Vikings hit six first-half three-pointers. WSU's largest lead was seven and the Vikings largest lead was six. A Woods jumper just before the halftime buzzer gave the Vikings a 46-42 lead.
Â
Hamrick and Goolsby combined for 17 points off the bench in the half. Hamrick hit three three-pointers and had a total of 11.
Â
Portland State pulled away with an 11-3 run six minutes into the half. Dunks by Goolsby and
Alonzo Walker punctuated the run as PSU went ahead 71-56 with 13:12 to play.
Â
A Goolsby dunk with 10:22 remaining again had the Vikings ahead by 15 at 77-62. From there, the Wildcats slowly, steadily chipped away at the deficit.
Â
Guards Cody John and Jerrick Harding combined for 39 points for Weber State on the night. John scored 10 over a six-minute stretch to lead the comeback. Harding scored twice on drives in the final two minutes, trimming the PSU lead to a scant two points. But Goolsby and Woods sunk the key free throws late, allowing the Vikings to hang on.
Â
Weber State shot .500 from the field for the night while the Vikings finished at .440. PSU made nine three-pointers and was good at the line (.778). The big difference came off the bench where the Vikings had a 37-11 advantage, led by Goolsby and Hamrick.
Â
Northern Arizona lost on Saturday night, dropping to 10-9 in Big Sky play. The Vikings are currently 10-8 in the Big Sky. The two teams meet next Thursday at Viking Pavilion.
