Vikings Earn Second Straight Sweep, Down Whitman 7-0

VANCOUVER – The Portland State women's tennis team earned a decisive victory on Saturday, defeating Whitman 7-0 in non-conference play at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

The Vikings improve to 3-3, 1-0 Big Sky on the season, completing their second straight sweep after defeating Southern Utah 7-0 last week.

Alli Valk and Emily Rees made quick work of their doubles match, finishing first with a 6-3 victory. Lotti Meszaros and Nina Nikitovic came back from a 2-1 deficit, winning 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Vikings.

Also coming back after falling behind 2-1 was Jacinta Milenkoski and Eszter Zador who won 6-3 to sweep doubles over the Blues.

"Today was definitely a mental game for us but I think we all fought really well, we started strong and kept that going through the rest of the day," said Gerda Upeniece, who won her match at the sixth spot. "These matches are tough because these players play a different style and you have to really focus and stay competitive."

Valk started singles play with another quick win, finishing 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 to give PSU a 2-0 advantage, extending her singles winning streak to four matches which leads the squad.

Earning her second straight win at No. 2 was Milenkoski who won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, while Nikitovic clinched the dual for Portland State, winning 6-4, 6-3 to improve to 3-1 at No. 3 on the season.

"We were lacking a little bit of support from each other I think but this match will make us so much stronger, there is so much we can take from today," added Upeniece.

Meszaros fought a hard match at No. 1, coming back from a 7-5 loss in the opening set to win 6-1 in the second before securing the win with a 10-2 result in the tiebreaker.

Returning to the lineup was Upeniece who tallied her third straight win, downing her opponent 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. Rees closed out the day holding on to a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-3) win to complete the sweep.

The Vikings return to Big Sky play on Sunday as they host Northern Arizona at the VTC at 10 a.m.
