With the absence of fall sports in 2020, GoViks.com is going to look back at some great moments in the history of Viking fall sports (volleyball, soccer, football, cross country, golf) on specific dates. This is not an exhaustive list, and not every date is covered, however as the fall progresses, the rich history of Viking Athletics will be remembered.
Editor's note: PSU also had wins of 93-7 over Cal Poly-Pomona and 75-0 over Weber State during the 1980 season.
Portland, OR (Nov. 8, 1980) - Portland State erased the Division I scoring record with a 105-0 win over Delaware State in an offensive and defensive showcase performance.
The PSU offense spent a mere 3 minutes, 57 seconds on the Civic Stadium's rain-drenched turf during the first period against Delaware State and the result was a 49-0 lead. It took only 20 snaps from center and led to seven touchdown passes by quarterback Neil Lomax out of Coach Mouse Davis' run-and-shoot offense. The senior quarterback then retired for all but a 3 minute, 31 second encoring in the third quarter, when he added one more TD pass and ran for another score.
Sophomore speedster Kenny Johnson was on the receiving end of four touchdown passes, Clint Didier and Dave Simantel each caught a pair of scores.
In all, PSU scored 10 by air, four by ground and one on a fumble recovery, with kicking ace John Kincheloe drilling 15 straight PATs to establish a new Division I-AA record in a game and a season (55).
The Vikings' Fred Nordgren was a force on defense, making six tackles behind the line for losses of 20 yards and making three fumble recoveries. Meanwhile, Delaware State's offense turned over the football six times on 16 fumbles. Five resulted in PSU scores.
Despite the 105 points, PSU gained "only" 451 yards on offense, holding Delaware State to 61.Â
