PORTLAND – The Portland State women's tennis team battled hard against Oregon on Saturday, collecting a win in both singles and doubles play as the Ducks held off the Vikings 6-1 at the Student Tennis Center.
 
The Vikings move to 0-2 on the season, playing both their duals against Pac-12 teams, while Oregon improves to 2-0.
 
"I was impressed with the way we came out in doubles," said Head Coach Kyle Russell. "All three teams came out firing and when we learn how to keep our foot on the gas we're going to be a good doubles squad. In singles, we played well but the Ducks pose some serious matchup problems and play unlike any other team on a few of the courts. If we play the big points better we will find a lot of success."
 
Jacinta Milenkoski and Eszter Zador won their doubles match at the No. 3 spot, defeating Oregon's duo 6-3, both picking up their second doubles victory of the season. The Ducks secured the doubles point, winning the other matches 6-3 and 6-2.
 
In singles, Gerda Upeniece brought her season win total to four matches as she took down Oregon's Taryn Fijimori in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, playing at the No. 6 spot.
 
Lotti Meszaros narrowly missed out on a win at the second spot, winning the tiebreaker in the first set 7-6 (7-4), before Oregon's Lillian Mould tied the match with a 6-1 win in the second. Forcing another tiebreaker, Mould edged out Meszaros with a 10-8 win in the third.
 
"Gerda made her match look routine which shows a lot of hard work that she has put in," added Russell. "Lotti, of course, fought hard and had herself a chance to win, those nail biters will provide a lot of experience to fall back on later in the year. Looking forward to our first home match. Go Vikes!"
 
The Vikings return to action next weekend as they host South Dakota in their first home match of the season at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
