Vikings Complete Road Sweep with 76-57 Win over Weber State

OGDEN, Utah — Up until last Monday against Montana, Portland State head women's basketball coach Lynn Kennedy said posts Jordan Stotler and Tatiana Streun hadn't shown the full 1-2 punch they could be down low for the Vikings.

That changed against the Lady Griz, when Streun finished with a career-high 30 points while Stotler had a career-high eight assists, many of them to Streun. Now, playing on another Monday, Streun and Stotler dominated down low once again, leading the Vikings to a 76-57 win over Weber State at Dee Events Center.

Monday's win over Weber State completes a rare road weekend sweep in Big Sky play for the Vikings, who beat Idaho State 69-64 Saturday. The Vikings hadn't beaten Idaho State on the road since Jan. 10, 2009, and hadn't beaten them anywhere since Jan. 17, 2011. Additionally, the Vikings had only gone 2-0 over a Big Sky road weekend one other time since 2012, and that was last year when the Vikings beat Northern Arizona and Southern Utah last February.

"A road sweep in conference is rare," Kennedy said after Monday's win. "We've come a long ways from the first weekend. We need to continue to work and be ready for the quick turnaround on Thursday, when we host Sacramento State."

Both Stotler and Streun finished with double-doubles to lead the Vikings against the Wildcats. Stotler finished with her fourth double-double of the season while posting 18 points and 14 rebounds to go with seven blocks. Streun, meanwhile, recorded her sixth double-double while finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists. Stotler's 14 rebounds and Streun's five assists marked season highs for each player, while Stotler's seven blocks are second only to the program record-tying nine blocks she had against then-No. 23 Tennessee on Dec. 21.

Sophomore Desirae Hansen added 17 points for the Vikings while recording a perfect shooting performance – 4-of-4 from the floor and 9-of-9 from the free throw line – Monday. It was a nice return to form for Hansen, who hadn't scored more than 11 points in a game since scoring 21 against Idaho on Jan. 2. Some tough shooting performances followed that game against Idaho for Hansen, including two days earlier against Idaho State, when Hansen went 4-of-13 from the floor and 1-of-5 from the line.

"Des allowed the game to come to her tonight," Kennedy said of Hansen. "She was automatic from the field and the free throw line."

Hansen came up especially big for the Vikings when the Wildcats made it a game again after the Vikings started the second half in a funk. The Vikings took a 20-point lead at 38-18 with 3:30 left before halftime, but then didn't make another field goal for the next five and a half minutes of game time. Weber State used that dry spell to go on a 12-2 run, cutting the Viking lead to 10 at 40-30.

It was still only a 12-point game with 3:05 left in the third quarter, when Hansen scored seven straight points for the Vikings to push the lead out to 18 again at 58-40. Hansen converted a three-point play to end her run with 1:21 left in the third, one of three And-1's she had in the game. Hansen's third And-1 came with 5:10 left to play in the fourth, and gave the Vikings their biggest lead of the game to that point at 70-47.

The Vikings could not miss early in the game, as they went 11-of-17 (.647) from the field in the first quarter, and 3-of-5 (.600) from three-point range. Freshmen Belle Frazier and Cassidy Gardner – two days after they went a combined 7-of-12 from deep in the Vikings' win over Idaho State – accounted for all three of the Vikings' makes from beyond the arc. Frazier hit her first two threes of the game, while Gardner hit her first attempt to give the Vikings a 24-10 lead with 1:15 left in the first quarter.

Things changed from there, however, as the Vikings went 10-of-32 over the next quarter and a half, and went just 2-of-12 from three-point range.

Gardner broke the drought with a three-pointer that made it 49-36 with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter. Frazier followed with her third three-pointer of the game a little later, giving the Vikings an 18-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Gardner finished with 10 points while Frazier followed with nine. Gardner also scored 13 points against Idaho State Saturday, giving her back-to-back double-figure games after she didn't have any coming into the weekend.

Streun was the leader for the Vikings early in the game, as 13 of her 15 points came in the first half when she was 6-of-7 from the field. Junior guard Kylie Jimenez added seven points for the Vikings while leading all players with six assists.

The Vikings have a quick turnaround for their next game, as they return home to host Sacramento State at Viking Pavilion Thursday. Tipoff between the Vikings and Hornets is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PT).
