Idaho Pulls Away From Vikings In Second Half To Win 72-61

Boxscore – PDF

Moscow, ID – A season-high number of turnovers and a poor-shooting second half was a bad combination for Portland State as it lost 72-61 at Idaho on Thursday.

The Vikings had a season-low point total as well, shooting .397 from the field and only 5-25 (.250) from three-point range. They also had 21 turnovers to only 11 for the Vandals.

Portland State appeared to be in decent shape early in the second half. The Vikings had their largest lead with a 50-44 advantage and 15:36 to play. But PSU made only four field goals the rest of the way. Idaho went on an 11-2 run to get the lead back. Down the stretch the Vandals were able to stretch the lead as the Vikings struggled to score.

Matt Hauser led Portland State with 13 points, but made only 5-16 shots. Holland Woods scored 10 points and passed off for six assists. Rashaad Goolsby scored 10 points off the bench.

Idaho's top player, Trevon Allen, hit his average with 20 points to lead all scorers.

Portland State took its second loss in a row and dropped to 7-8 on the season. The Vikings are now 1-2 in Big Sky Conference play. Idaho, which had lost its first two league games by only three points, is now 5-9 overall, 1-2 in the Big Sky.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half until a late run by the Vandals. After a Kyle Greeley lay-in gave the Vikings a brief 32-21 lead, Idaho scored nine straight points.

Portland State closed the deficit to 42-38 by halftime. The Vikings were shooting well at that point, hitting 14-28 from the field (.500) in the half, but were hurt by 10 turnovers and 10 fouls. Idaho, meanwhile, hit 15-27 shots (.556) and 10-11 at the line (.909) in the half.

Portland State got the lead back on a drive by Holland Woods with 16:46 left in the game. Woods lay-in-and-one pushed the Vikings to a 46-44 lead. Alonzo Walker followed with a driving lay-in, then Rashaad Goolsby tipped back a PSU miss and the Vikings had a 10-0 run and 50-44 advantage.

The game soon fell apart for the Vikings as they made only 9-30 in the second half, including 2-13 from distance.

Idaho finished at a solid 27-57 from the field (.474) and 16-19 at the line (.842).

Portland State out-rebounded the Vandals 40-30, including 12 on the offensive glass. Walker grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds to lead the Vikings. He also blocked two shots and scored eight points.
