Vikings End Season With Upset Win Against Sacramento State

The emotions present at a Senior Day are always extraordinary. The pregame recognition of players that have given everything they have to a program for four years can make players and coaches alike emotional. But the emotions following a Senior Day win are even sweeter, which the Portland State women's tennis team experienced on Saturday.

Portland State (5-10/2-8 BSC) upset Sacramento State in the final match of the season, sending seniors Taylor Rees and Ashley Knecht out in the best way possible.

The odds were stacked up against the Vikings entering the match, as the Hornets have clinched a spot in the Big Sky tournament and are a traditional power in the conference. Add in the fact that most of Portland State's team is currently dealing with being sick, and many would have counted the Vikings out. But they showed the fight that has come to define the final stretch of their season in the most impressive win yet.

It secured the fifth win of the season, the most since 2016 for Portland State.

Portland State started it off by claiming the doubles point. Sacramento State only had five players, meaning they automatically lost at No. 3 doubles. They evened it back up with a win at No. 2, however, beating the senior pairing of Rees/Knecht 6-2.

But Eszter Zador and Alli Valk, a pairing that has been great together this year, won 6-1 at the top spot to clinch the point for the Vikings. It was the fifth win of the season for the pairing.

The Vikings then automatically took a point at No. 6 singles, where Knecht was set to play, to move ahead 2-0 in the dual. Eszter Zador finished off her dominant season in familiar fashion, winning 7-6 (5), 6-0 at No. 3 to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Freshman Jacinta Milenkoski then delivered the winning point for the Vikings, outlasting Jayden Nielsen at No. 1 singles. She won 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-2 for her fifth win of the season.

Sacramento State would respond following that, winning by way of a retirement at No. 2 singles once the dual had been decided. Alli Valk then lost a very tight match at No. 5 7-6 (6), 6-4. The Hornets brought the dual to its final score with another tight win at No. 5. Frana Ugarkovich knocked off Rees 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6).

Rees still finishes the career leader at Portland State for wins at No. 6 singles (16) and winning percentage at the line (.552). She is also tied for seventh in program history with 21 career singles wins and tied for fourth in Big Sky singles wins.

Her historic career also includes 13 Big Sky doubles wins, which is tied for the sixth most in program history. Her 14 wins at No. 2 doubles are tied for the second most of all time, and she also has the sixth best winning percentage (.412) at the line.

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings are now 2-18 all-time vs. Sacramento State … Eszter Zador finishes the season 10-3, including an 8-2 mark at No. 4. That is the fifth-most wins at the line in a single season in program history.
