Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Jackson Wagner

Vikings Win Second Straight, Prepare for Southern Utah

Winning sure does feel good. The Portland State women's tennis team started a streak on Saturday, beating Dixie State for its second consecutive win as they near the end of the 2019 season.

The Vikings have now won their previous two matches by a combined score of 13-1 and have been winners in three of the previous five matches. Even more impressive, PSU has only had one home match during that stretch, learning after some early season defeats and putting forth impressive effort away from home.

The doubles competition was narrow at a couple of lines, but the Vikings swept through it for the first point of the day. Lotti Meszaros and Taylor Rees won 6-1 at No. 2 to help set the tone. The other two matches came down to the wire, where the experience of the Portland State team won the day.

Alli Valk and Eszter Zador clinched the point, winning a tiebreaker 7-4 at No. 3 to put the Vikings ahead 1-0. Then at the top spot, Jacinta Milenkoski and Nina Nikitovic outlasted a pesky opponent for a 7-5 win.

Taylor Rees continued her strong return to the lineup with the first win of the singles competition for PSU. She won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 for her 16th career win at that line. Eszter Zador added another point with a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 to put the Vikings ahead 3-0. She in now 7-2 at that line this season, tied for the fifth most wins by a Viking at the spot in a single season.

The match was then clinched by Jacinta Milenkoski, who won 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot for her second consecutive win. It moved her to 4-6 on the season. Lotti Meszaros then made it 5-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2, bringing her back to .500 on the season at that line.

Nina Nikitovic showed fight at No. 3, dropping the first set but not giving up. She cruised through the final two sets on her way to a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. The only point the Vikings dropped came at No. 5, where Alli Valk came out on the wrong side of a tightly contested match. She won the first set but ultimately fell 2-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (6).

The successful run for the Vikings brings them to the final two conference matches of the season. They will get right back to it on Sunday against Southern Utah. The match has been moved because of weather in Cedar City and the start time is still to be determined. They then return home for Senior Day against Sacramento State on Apr. 20.

MATCH NOTES: This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
