Vikings Snap Losing Streak Against Lewis-Clark State

The proverbial monkey is off the back of the Portland State women's tennis team, which picked up its first win of the season on Saturday in a 7-0 sweep of Lewis-Clark State. It is the first win for the Vikings since April 16, 2017 when they defeated Bellevue College 7-0, but it could be a sign that this team is ready to make some noise in the Big Sky now that it is healthy again.

"The team is super happy, as am I, to have the win," head coach Jay Sterling said. "There are more on the table with all of the matches that we have left, but we'll enjoy this one for now. They deserved it."

Lotti Meszaros and Jacinta Milenkoski each picked up their first wins at Portland State to highlight the day for the Vikings. PSU needed just two sets in five of the six singles matches and won all three doubles matches for that point as well.

Milenkoski, who has played in just half of the Vikings' matches this year after starting the season off injured, paired with Nikitovic for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Alli Valk and Eszter Zador paired up at No. 2 for a 6-1 win and Meszaros and Gerda Upeniece won 6-2 at No. 3.

Zador, who had a fantastic start to the season at 3-1, picked up another win on Saturday. She finished first for the Vikings, rolling to a 6-3, 6-1 win. She is now 4-1 on the year with all of the matches coming at No. 4.

Meszaros shook off an 0-5 start to the season with a dominant straight sets win. She beat Laura Rosselli 6-2, 6-2 to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. The match was clinched by Gerda Upeniece, who showed resilience after a slow start. She trailed 0-3 in the first set and battled back before falling 4-6.

She bounced right back, dominating 6-1, 6-1 in the final two sets to clinch the match for the Vikings and snap a 21-match losing streak for PSU.

The rest of the Vikings didn't let up. Nikitovic won her third match of the season 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 to make it 5-0 in favor of the hosts. Milenkoski, who returned to action last week, continues to return to full health and should take confidence in a big win. She beat Begona Andres 6-3, 6-4.

Alli Valk finished off the sweep for the Vikings at No. 5 singles. She had a great performance for her second win of the year, beating Sophie Uhlenkott 6-1, 6-1.

In a bonus match, Ashley Knecht had a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win.

The win should help move Portland State in the right direction heading into back-to-back conference matches at home. They will take on Eastern Washington on Mar. 17 and conference leader Idaho on Mar. 23. Both matches will be played at 10 a.m. at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

MATCH NOTES: Portland State snapped a 21-match losing streak with the win … The Vikings last win came on April 16, 2017 against Bellevue College … Jacinta Milenkoski and Lotti Meszaros each picked up their first dual wins as Vikings.
