Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Jackson Wagner

Vikings Fall to Preseason Favorite Northern Arizona

The preseason conference favorites were too much for the Portland State women's tennis team to handle on Saturday as the Vikings lost 7-0 on the road to Northern Arizona. The Vikings fall to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in Big Sky matches with five dates remaining on the schedule.

Portland State, fresh off its first Big Sky win of the season, struggled against the elevation in Flagstaff and the talent level of the Lumberjacks. Northern Arizona took all three doubles matches to clinch the first point of the day.

In singles, Portland State battled but was unable to get a point. Jacinta Milenkoski faced another one of the Big Sky's best, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Chiara Tomasetti, who was nationally ranked for much of the season. The freshman continues to get great experience while playing at No. 1 for PSU.

Lotti Meszaros battled at No. 2 but fell 7-5, 6-2 to Hanneke Lodewijks. Nina Nikitovic lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 for the Vikings and Eszter Zador fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. In the match that clinched the win for NAU, Madi Moore defeated Gerda Upeniece 6-2. 6-1 at No. 6.

Alli Valk had perhaps the best chance of the day for the Vikings. After falling 6-3 in the first set Valk bounced back to take a 3-1 lead in the second. But after a lengthy injury timeout, Valk couldn't get back into her rhythm and fell 6-4.

Portland State will return to action tomorrow with a non-conference match against UTEP, which will be played in Flagstaff. They will then return home next week for another non-conference match, this time against Lewis & Clark.

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings fall to 1-19 all-time vs. Northern Arizona … This is the first time in the 2019 season that the Vikings have been shutout.
