Hillsboro, OR – A close game got away from Portland State in the late-going as they lost to UC Davis, 45-28, in a Big Sky Conference game at Hillsboro Stadium.

The Vikings never led but stayed in touch throughout the game. In fact, when running back Carlos Martin took a short pass from quarterback Davis Alexander and turned it into an 18-yard touchdown with 8:33 to play, PSU trailed the Aggies by just a field goal, 31-28.

UCD quarterback Jake Maier answered back just three plays later on a 58-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Khris Vaughn. Maier threw a deep ball to Vaughn, who was blanketed by PSU defensive back Anthony Adams. The pair went up and tipped the ball in midair at least twice before Vaughn was able to wrestle it away and scamper into the end zone. That put the Aggies ahead 38-28 with 7:36 to play.

Portland State was unable to muster any points on its next two offensive series. Following a late Viking fumble, UC Davis tacked on one more touchdown for the final score.

The Aggies had a huge day on offense behind their All-American quarterback. Maier completed 27-38 passes for 383 yards and four touchdowns. Three went to Lance Babb II, who caught 10 passes for 168 yards. In the running game, Ulonzo Gilliam also had a monster day with 29 carries for 242 yards and two scores.

In all, UCD totaled 649 yards of offense, the most given up by PSU all season.

Portland State went for 435 yards of offense, and though it trailed most of the game, was able to stay close.

Alexander also threw four touchdown passes, completing 23-47 for 285 yards.

Emmanuel Daigbe led the Viking offense with five receptions for 81 yards. He had touchdown catches of eight and 55 yards. Daigbe also rushed four times for 21 yards in the game. Charlie Taumoepeau had five receptions, 40 yards, and a seven-yard TD reception.

Portland State trailed 17-14 going into halftime. The Aggies scored first in the second half when Gilliam broke away on a 75-yard touchdown run. But, the Vikings were able to match that score with Daigbe's long TD, then the next score with Martin's TD.

However, on the Vikings' final three offensive series' Alexander had trouble finding open receivers, regularly had to scramble out of trouble, and completed only 3-13 passes.

Portland State dropped to 5-6 on the season with the loss, 3-4 in the Big Sky. It is the third loss in a row for the Vikings.

UC Davis improved to 5-5, 3-3.
