PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State volleyball team ran into a hot Weber State team Saturday night at Viking Pavilion. The Wildcats won for the ninth time in their last 10 matches while sweeping the Vikings, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18).
Â
The Vikings (9-18, 5-11 Big Sky) never trailed by too many points early in any set Saturday, but the Wildcats (20-7, 11-5 Big Sky) would frequently run off five, six or seven points in a row to stay ahead of the Vikings. The Wildcats' streaks kept the Vikings from ever getting over the hump and taking a set off the Wildcats.
Â
The first set showcased the Wildcats' potent runs more than any other. After the Vikings started in a 7-2 hole, they twice got back within a point before Weber State would run off four or five points in a row to edge ahead again. The Wildcats closed the set on a 5-1 run after the Vikings got back within two at 20-18.
Â
The second set followed a similar script, as the Wildcats took an early lead before the Vikings tied it up again at 13-13. It was still a one-point set with Weber State leading 16-15 when the Wildcats scored eight straight points to take complete control of the set.
Â
The Wildcats maintained a more comfortable lead in the third set, as they ran out to a 10-4 advantage and then kept at least three points between them and the Vikings the rest of the way.
Â
The Wildcat defense, which came into Saturday's match leading the Big Sky in opponent hitting percentage, made it tough for the Viking offense to gather too much momentum. The Wildcats forced the Vikings into 16 attack errors, while the Wildcats outhit the Vikings, .257-to-.136.
Â
The Wildcats also held a significant advantage on the serve in Saturday's match. The Wildcats hit 10 service aces against the Vikings, while the Vikings committed 10 service errors.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Parker Webb was a bright spot for the Vikings, as she led all players with 13 kills Saturday while adding seven digs. Webb hit .345 in the match, the fourth straight match and eighth overall in which she's hit over .300 for the Vikings.
Â
Junior
Maddy Reeb, who got the start Saturday after tying a career high with 15 kills in Thursday's match against Idaho State, finished with seven kills and 10 digs.
Â
Freshman setter
Caroline Dragani had 24 assists and six digs for the Vikings, while freshman libero
Ellie Snook led all players with 18 digs.
Â
The Vikings close out their home schedule Tuesday, as they host Sacramento State at 7 p.m. (PT) at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings will honor seniors
Toni McDougald and
Mary Jo McBride before the match.
