NAU Extends Win Streak with 6-1 Victory over Vikings

VANCOUVER, Wash. —
Northern Arizona came into its match against the Portland State women's tennis team having won 23 straight Big Sky regular-season matches, and the Vikings weren't up for stopping the streak there Friday as the Lumberjacks extended it to 24 with a 6-1 win over the Vikings at Club Green Meadows.

The Vikings (0-8, 0-4 Big Sky) got their lone point in the dual from sophomore Eszter Zador, who beat NAU's Cora-Lynn Von Dungern in straight sets at line three.

"I thought we did a better job today than we did against Washington [two weeks ago], which was good to see," PSU head coach Jay Sterling said. "Certainly we need to take the experience from the last two matches and make some gains on that against North Dakota on Sunday. I'm super proud of Eszter, though."

Zador took control of her match with a break at 3-2, and held that advantage before serving out the first set, 6-3. Neither Zador nor Von Dungern could break the other in the second set, and the players held serve all the way to second-set tiebreak. Von Dungern took an early 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker, but Zador won the next four points to take a 4-3 lead. Von Dungern saved a match point to get to 6-all in the tiebreaker, and then saved another on Zador's racket to get to 7-all. Zador calmly won the next point on her serve, however, and then closed out a 6-3, 7-6 (7) win on her third match point.

Zador has now won four singles matches for the Vikings this season between two each at lines two and three. Zador leads the team with her four singles wins, and also sports a team-best 4-4 overall record.

The Vikings had chances in other matches against the Lumberjacks (8-2, 3-0 Big Sky), but couldn't quite finish things off.

Junior Ashley Knecht led in both sets of her match against Worthy Goldman at line six. Knecht was serving for the first set at 5-4 when Goldman broke her, and Goldman won the next two games as well to steal the set, 7-5. Knecht rebounded to break Goldman in the first game of the second set, but Goldman won the final five games of the set to win their match 7-5, 6-2.

Junior Taylor Rees also took an early lead in her match against NAU's Eirene Granville at line five. Rees broke to go up 2-0 on Granville early, but Granville broke right back to get back on serve. Granville broke to go up 4-3 in the first set, and still led 5-4 after the players traded breaks in the two games after that. Granville served out the first set for a 6-4 win, and then broke to take a 2-1 lead in the second set. Rees got back on serve to take her first lead of the second set at 3-2, but Granville won the final four games to close out a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Rees also led in her doubles match at line two with Alli Valk, only to have NAU come back and get the win. Valk and Rees broke to go up 2-0, and then traded breaks with NAU's Chiara Tomasetti and Madi Moore to maintain their lead at 3-1. Tomasetti and Moore found their way back in the match from there, however, and made the decisive break at 4-all before serving out a 6-4 win in the following game.

Zador and Siena Peri did not lead in their match at No. 1 doubles, but mounted an impressive comeback before their match against NAU's Hanneke Lodwijks and Ellie Millard was called after the Lumberjacks wrapped up the doubles point. Zador and Peri fell behind 4-0 in the match before winning the next three games to get to 4-3. The Vikings had break points to get to 4-all, but Lodwijks and Millard held serve to take a 5-3 lead when the match was called.

The Vikings have a quick turnaround for their next match, as they host North Dakota Sunday at 10 a.m. at Club Green Meadows.
