VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Portland State women's tennis team had played six straight 4-3 matches against Weber State, and will be left wondering how their match Friday wasn't 4-3 again as the Vikings played a number of close matches but lost 7-0 to the Wildcats at Club Green Meadows.
Â
The Vikings (0-10, 0-6 Big Sky) won the first set at lines one, two and four in singles, and led in both contested doubles matches against the Wildcats (6-6, 3-1 Big Sky). The Wildcats came back to win all three singles matches in 10-point tiebreakers, however, and broke late at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
Â
The Vikings started the match in a hole, as they were down to five players again – forcing them to forfeit the matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. That put the Vikings down 2-0 in the dual after the Wildcats won the doubles point, and the Wildcats quickly made it 4-0 with dominant wins at lines three and five in singles.
Â
The Vikings held the advantage in the remaining three singles matches, however, raising the possibility of another 4-3 finish against the Wildcats.
Â
Eszter Zador was one of the Vikings to run out to an early lead in her match, as she broke the Wildcats' Caitlin Herb for a 4-2 lead in the first set at line two, and then served out the set, 6-3, a few games later. Herb broke Zador in her first service game of the second set, however, and broke again for a 5-1 lead before serving it out in the following game.
Â
With the dual decided by that point, the players went to a 10-point match tiebreaker, and Herb ran out to an early 4-0 lead. Zador mounted a comeback from there, winning six of the next eight points to get to 6-all, but Herb closed out the match by winning four straight points again to complete a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) win.
Â
Taylor Rees also ran out to an early lead in her match against Weber State's Dominique Beauvais at line four. Rees broke Beauvais in the first game of their match, and then broke again for a 4-1 lead. Beauvais broke back with Rees serving for the set at 5-2, but Rees served it out on her second opportunity to take the opening set, 6-4.
Â
Beauvais carried that late momentum into the second set, however, and broke for a 4-2 lead midway through the set. Rees broke back with Beauvais serving for the set at 5-3, but Beauvais returned the favor in the next game to take the set, 6-4.
Â
Rees ran out to a 4-2 lead by the first changeover in the ensuing match tiebreaker, and led 7-5 at the second changeover. Beauvais won four of the next five points to take a 9-8 lead, but Rees saved two straight match points to get to 9-all and then 10-all. Beauvais converted on her third match point, however, giving her a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) win.
Â
Rees' match concluded just as
Siena Peri was heading to a third 10-point tiebreaker after losing a close second set to Weber State's Patty Kuo at line one. Peri and Kuo traded three straight breaks to open the first set of their match, leaving Peri up a break at 2-1. Peri went up another break at 4-1 and served out the opening set a few games later, 6-2.
Â
Peri broke again to take a 4-3 lead in the second set, and then saved a break point in the following game to hold serve and take a 5-3 lead. Kuo broke Peri at deuce with Peri serving for the match at 5-3, but Peri broke Kuo at love in the following game to take a 6-5 lead and give herself a second chance to serve for the match. Kuo broke again to force a second-set tiebreaker, however, where she ran out to an early lead and held on to win the breaker, 7-4.
Â
Peri rebounded to take the early lead in the ensuing match tiebreaker, as she led 4-2 by the first changeover, and stretched that to an 8-4 lead by the second changeover. Peri won the next point as well, giving her a 9-4 lead and five match points. Kuo saved all five match points to get to 9-all, however, and then saved another match point to get to 10-all. Kuo won the next point to earn her first match point at 11-10 in the tiebreaker, which she converted to complete a dramatic comeback win, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (12-10).
Â
The Vikings will have to shake the sting of the loss off quickly, as they host Northern Colorado Sunday for another Big Sky match. First serve between the Vikings and Bears will be at 9 a.m. at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
