OGDEN, Utah –
Kiana Brown laid it in with 1.9 second left on the clock to give the Vikings a 62-60 win over Weber State Thursday night in Ogden, Utah. It was the Wildcats' first Big Sky Conference home loss.
Â
The win gives Portland State (14-10 overall, 8-5 Big Sky) its third-straight win and the season sweep over Weber State. The Vikings now sit in a four-way tie for third with Weber State, Idaho State, and Eastern Washington. If the season ended today, the Vikings would finish the season in third based on tiebreakers.
Â
Both Portland State and Weber State (16-8, 8-5) struggled from the floor on the night but both seemed to find their rhythm late in the fourth quarter. The Vikings hit seven of their final eight shots, while the Wildcats hit their final three, all three-pointers.
Â
Portland State finished the game shooting 42.9 percent from the floor, while Weber State shot just 27.8 percent. It was the first time this season that the Vikings held an NCAA Division I opponent to less-than 30 percent from the floor and the first time since doing it twice against Montana a year ago. The Vikings have held their last seven opponents under 40 percent from the floor, going 5-2 over that stretch.
Â
Weber State came into the game as the top-scoring team in the Big Sky, averaging 74.0 points per game. Portland State held the Wildcats to 60 points, their fewest since posting 58 in a loss to Utah in the second game of the season.
Â
The Wildcats took a six-point lead, their largest of the game, following a three-pointer with 6:25 left in the fourth. From that point, the Vikings went on a 10-0 run to retake the lead and go up four at 55-51.
Â
Portland State pulled within two at 51-49 with just under five minutes remaining. Weber State had four-straight offensive rebounds on its next possession but the Vikings held steadfast and did not surrender a basket.
Â
Courtney West came up with a steal to end the possession.
Ashley Bolston was fouled on the other end and tied it at 51-51 with a pair of free throws. A free-throw line jumper from Brown, followed by a layup from
Tatiana Streun, put the Vikings up four with 1:59 remaining.
Â
After missing eight-straight shots, Weber State hit a three-pointer to pull within one. Bolston made it a three-point game but the Wildcats quickly hit another three to tie it once again. On the Vikings' next possession, Brown countered with a three-pointer of her own, her only one of the game, to put the Vikings up 60-57.
Â
After calling its final timeout to advance the ball, Weber State hit its third-straight triple to tie the game at 60-60 with just nine seconds remaining. It was Portland State's time to call a timeout to advance the ball. The Vikings got the ball to Brown around midcourt. After dribbling off a few seconds, a driving lane opened for Brown on the right side. She attacked the basket and laid it in with 1.9 seconds left on the clock.
Â
With no timeouts remaining, the Wildcats had to go the distance to tie. They got the ball to midcourt where three Vikings surrounded it as time expired.
Â
Brown finished with 15 points, going 7-for-14 with a three-pointer in 21 minutes of action off the bench. The Vikings were plus-15 with her on the floor. Bolston led the team with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. She went 4-for-4 at the line and pulled down six boards.
Â
Sidney Rielly added 11 points and three rebounds. West scored seven points, all coming in the second half, and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. It was her fifth double-digit rebound game of the season.
Â
Weber State's Kailie Quinn scored a game-high 19 points, hitting 5-of-9 from distance. Portland State held Larryn Brooks, the Big Sky's third-leading scorer, to just eight points. Â
Â
The Wildcats out-rebounded the Vikings 48-to-37 and especially dominated on the offensive glass, pulling down 22 boards. To the Vikings' credit, they allowed just 14 second-chance points. Portland State turned the ball over 12 but Weber State was held to just six points off turnovers.
Â
Portland State goes from one big game to another. The Vikings head to Pocatello, Idaho where they will face the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. PT. Portland State and Idaho State are tied with identical 8-5 records. The Bengals took the first meeting of the year, 88-59, to give the Vikings their worst loss of Big Sky play.Â
