PORTLAND, Ore. — Facing one of the better teams in the Big Sky on Senior Night Tuesday, the Portland State volleyball team wasn't able to send its six seniors off with a win as Sacramento State swept the Vikings, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15.

The Vikings (5-24, 4-13 Big Sky) struggled with the Hornets' serve all night, committing 10 receiving errors, five of which came in the first set. That got the Vikings off to a tough start, even as the team hit pretty well in the set with a .212 (12-5-33) hitting percentage.

The Hornets (16-15, 11-6 Big Sky) opened the match with a service ace, and quickly ran out to an 8-2 lead in the first set. Junior
Toni McDougald came in for the Vikings and got them back within four at 8-4 with a back-to-back kill and combo block with
Timi Severson.

Freshman
Peyton McBride snapped a 3-0 Sacramento State run with her third kill of first set to make it 13-7 SAC, while senior
Katy Wilson got on the board with a kill of a middle attack that made it 14-9. McBride came back with back-to-back kills to get the Vikings back within five at 21-16, but the Hornets closed out the set a few points later with another service ace.

McBride finished with six kills on 10 attacks and no errors in the first set, and added three digs for the Vikings.

The Hornets ran out to another big lead at the start of the second set, as they led by as many as nine at 13-4. McDougald got the Vikings back within five points at 14-9 with back-to-back kills, the second coming on an over pass after a tough serve from Wilson.

The Hornets stretched their lead back to nine points at 23-14, however, and closed out the set a few points later at 25-19.

The Vikings stayed closer to the Hornets at the start of the third set, but still trailed 10-6 before the Hornets went on an 8-2 run that gave them a commanding 18-8 lead. Senior
Jenna Mullen had two kills late to get the Vikings back within seven at 22-15, but the Hornets scored the final three points to close out the match.

Mullen finished with a team-high eight kills against the Hornets, and added four digs and a block assist. McBride finished with six kills and eight digs, while fellow freshman
Mackenzie Sullivan led the Vikings with 18 digs. Sophomore setter
Maddy Reeb finished with 22 assists and five digs against the Hornets.

The Vikings will close their season Thursday, when they travel to face Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. (MT) in Greeley, Colo.
