MOSCOW, Idaho —The Portland State volleyball team couldn't duplicate its success from Thursday night, when the Vikings snapped a 15-match losing streak with a five-set win over Eastern Washington, as the Idaho Vandals swept the Vikings 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) at Memorial Gym Saturday.
The Vandals (10-8, 4-2 Big Sky) forced the Vikings (2-16, 1-5 Big Sky) to play from behind in every set Saturday, and outhit the Vikings .311-to-.018.
Only senior
Katy Wilson hit better than .100 in the match, as she hit .412 while leading the Vikings with nine kills. Wilson has now hit .400 or better in her last three matches – including Thursday, when she hit .429 with a team-high 17 kills against only two errors – after hitting .100 or less in the three matches before that.
Wilson had four kills each in the second and third sets alone, and led the Vikings with three block assists in the match.
The Vikings fell behind 16-9 early in the first set, but used a 4-0 run that included a combo block from
Whitney Turner and
Toni McDougald, as well as a solo block from
Jenna Mullen, to get back within three at 16-13. The Vikings were still within three at 18-15, but the Vandals followed with five straight points to put the set out of reach.
Idaho dominated the first part of the second set, too, as the Vandals ran out to an early 17-5 lead. The Vikings scored nine of the next 11 points to get back within five at 19-14, however, with Wilson providing four points in the run between two kills and two blocks. The Vandals won six of the last eight points in the set, though, to win, 25-16.
The Vikings stayed with the Vandals early in the third set, as unlike the first two sets, the Vikings were three points or closer to the Vandals over the entire first half of the frame. The Vandals separated themselves a bit by taking a 17-12 lead, but the Vikings responded with three straight points to get back within two at 17-15. Just like the second set, however, the Vandals dominated the latter part of the frame, winning eight of the last 10 points to close out the sweep, 25-17, in the third.
Freshman
Peyton McBride added seven kills and eight digs in the match for the Vikings. Sophomore setter
Maddy Reeb led the Vikings with 21 assists, while senior libero
Hadley Heck recorded a team-high nine digs.
The Vikings will be home for the next two weeks, as they host four straight matches at the new Viking Pavilion. The Vikings begin their run at home with a match against Weber State Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. (PT).
Match Notes: The Vikings fell to 16-5 all time against Idaho with Saturday's loss…The Vikings also fell to 3-2 against Idaho in Big Sky matches with the loss…Wilson improved her career hitting percentage to .305 over the weekend, which would break the Division I career record at Portland State if the season ended today.
