Vandals Outshoot Vikings in High-Scoring Affair

PORTLAND – The Vikings dropped their first home game of the season, falling 101-90 to the Idaho Vandals in an old-fashioned shootout Saturday afternoon at the Pamplin Sports Complex.

Portland State (8-6 overall, 2-1 Big Sky Conference) trailed by as much as 15 points in the second quarter. The Vikings cut the lead to five points twice in the third but could not finish the comeback.

The Vikings hit the 90-point plateau for the fourth time this season but allowed a season-high 101 points as both teams shot over 50-percent from the floor. Portland State shot a season-high 53.8 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three-point range, going 9-for-18, also a season high.

However, it was the three-point shooting of Idaho that was the difference. The Vandals shot 59.0 percent from the floor and 48.4 percent from distance, going 15-for-31 from beyond the arc. Idaho hit six triples in the first quarter and five more in the second quarter as they blitzed the Vikings from distance. Every time the Vikings would close the gap, the Vandals hit another three-pointer to create more separation.

JR G Ashley Bolston continued her shot start to the season with a team-high 22 points over 35 minutes of action. She went 8-for-13 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. She was also 4-for-4 at the line. She pulled down six rebounds and had five assists but did turn the ball over six times. JR G Sidney Rielly added 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a pair of triples.

FR G Kylie Jimenez continues to play well beyond her years running the point for the Vikings. She scored 16 points, one shy of her career high, going 7-for-13 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. She pulled down two rebounds and dished out nine assists, matching her career best, without committing a turnover.

It was the second-straight game in which Jimenez did not commit a turnover. She leads the Big Sky Conference with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year. During her first three league games, that number has increased to 10.0 with 20 assists and just two turnovers.

Idaho's three-point shooting barrage blitzed the Vikings out of the gate in the first quarter. Mikayla Ferenz showed why she is the Big Sky's leading scorer. She scored the Vandals' first nine points, all from three-point range, to give Idaho an early 9-2 advantage. She continued her hot shooting leading the Vandals to a 25-12 lead at the end of the first.

After falling behind by 15 early in the second quarter, the Vikings started to claw their way back into the game. Bolston hit a three pointer to start a 7-0 run by the Vikings to make it an eight-point game.

Ferenz hit another three-pointer later in the period to give Idaho a 12-point lead a 43-31. Bolston drove strong to the basket, drew the foul, made the basket, and hit the free throw before a jumper from Rielly pulled Portland State within seven.

After another Idaho three-pointer, its 11th of the first half, Bolston hit a three of her own with seven seconds left to make it a 46-39 game at the half.

Both teams shot 50-percent from the floor in the first half but it was the three-point shooting of the Vandals that made the difference. They went 11-for-20 from the beyond the arc with Ferenz accounting for six of the 11. She led all scorers with 21 points in the first half.

After two quick baskets by Idaho pushed the lead back to 11, the Vikings went on a 7-2 run to make it a six-point game at 52-46 after and and-one from Rielly. After another basket by Idaho, JR G Corey James hit her second three-pointer of the game to pull the Vikings within five with 7:01 left in the third.

Idaho countered with four straight baskets to retake a 13-point lead a 62-49. Jimenez hit a jumper followed by a three-pointer from Rielly and the lead was back to eight. Jimenez hit another triple and the Vikings cut the lead once again to five at 62-57.

The Vandals came back with another 7-0 run to go up by 12 with 2:23 left in the third. The teams traded baskets but Idaho led 74-63 heading to the fourth quarter.

Portland State cut the lead to single digits early in the fourth but could not get closer than seven points as Idaho maintained a double-digit lead for most of the fourth before taking the game 101-90.

Ferenz finished with a season-high 39 points, going 13-for-21 from the floor and 8-for-13 from distance. Geraldine McCorkell added 23 points, while Taylor Pierce added 22.

Portland State hits the road next week for its first Big Sky road trip of the season. The Vikings head Bozeman, Mont. to take on Montana State on Thursday, January 11 before heading to Missoula, Mont. to face the Montana Lady Griz on Saturday, Jan. 13.
