VANCOUVER, Wash. — Dealt a bad hand with three absences to deal with, the Portland State women's tennis team wasn't able to kick off its 2018 season the way it would have wanted to in a 6-1 loss to UC Davis Saturday at Club Green Meadows.
 
The three absences meant the Vikings (0-1) had to forfeit the matches at No. 5 and 6 singles, and No. 3 doubles – putting them in a 2-0 hole right from the start. The Vikings would have had to either sweep the remaining two doubles matches and win three of the four singles matches, or sweep all four singles matches to even have a chance to win, 4-3.
 
No such miracle occurred, though the Vikings did pick up a quality win from sophomore transfer Eszter Zador. Playing at line two, Zador dropped only five games while beating UC Davis' Kristina Breisacher 6-3, 6-2.
 
The Vikings will hope for better health tomorrow, when they host South Dakota in a match at the Evergreen Tennis Center in Camas, Wash., at 8 a.m. (PT).
