Riverside, CA - Portland State heads into the meat of its non-conference schedule off a hot start following a 94-82 road win at UC Riverside on Saturday.
Portland State moves to 3-0 for the first time since starting 4-0 in 2014-15.
Senior guard Bryce Canda led five Vikings in double figures with a career-high 20 points. He also had 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.Â
Junior guard Michael Mayhew came off the bench to score 13 points in the first half and help stake the Vikings to a 47-36 lead at the break. Each team struggled with pressure as the Highlanders had 15 turnovers by halftime, while the Vikings had 14.
Portland State's largest lead was 45-31 with just over a minute to play in the first half.
Canda scored 15 of his 20 in the second half as the Vikings held off the Highlanders. PSU never allowed UC Riverside to get closer than seven after intermission.
For the third straight game, the Vikings used pressure to make a difference. They forced 23 Highlander turnovers and converted them into 20 points. PSU also scored 16 points off 23 offensive rebounds.Â
PSU shot .440 from the field for the game and made 12-30 from three-point range. The Highlanders shot .467 from the field, but converted only 2-12 threes.Â
In addition to Canda's 20, Deontae North scored 15 points. Center Ryan Edwards had 14 points on 6-8 shooting with two blocked shots. Mayhew scored 13 and point guard Deante Strickland had 12 points.Â
Freshman guard Holland Woods scored nine points with eight rebounds and six assists off the bench.Â
For UC Riverside, Ajani Kennedy came off the bench to score 16 points on 6-6 field goals, including a pair of threes. Dikymbe Martin had 15 points.Â
The Highlanders, who opened the season with a win at California, dropped to 1-2.Â
