Pocatello, ID – For the second week in a row the Portland State Vikings saw a close game turn into a runaway as they lost to Idaho State, 59-30, at Holt Arena.

PSU was within a point at 17-16 in the second quarter following a touchdown run by Andre Petties-Wilson. However, an explosive Idaho State offense ran off four straight touchdowns that had the Vikings reeling and, ultimately, out of the game.

The loss dropped Portland State to 0-7 on the season, 0-4 in the Big Sky Conference. ISU improved to 4-4, 2-3.

Idaho State gifted the Vikings two points on the Bengals' first play from scrimmage. A snap over the head of quarterback Tanner Gueller went through the end zone for a safety.

The Bengals came back on their next two series to get a short field goal by Zak Johnson and a touchdown run from Ty Flanagan for a 10-2 lead with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter.

The Vikings found the end zone late in the quarter as Jalani Eason tossed a 31-yard ball down the right sideline to Trent Riley. The extra point made it 10-9 ISU.

Flanagan added another short touchdown run one minute into the second quarter and it was 17-9 Bengals.

Petties-Wilson answered for the Vikings in one play. He broke through the line for a PSU season-long 77-yard run and touchdown.

It was 17-16, but the Bengals took over from there scoring four straight touchdowns over the next 20 minutes of play.

Gueller came back to throw two touchdown passes before the end of the half. The first was a 13-yarder to Hagen Graves, the second a 97-yard bomb to his brother Mitch Gueller. That had Idaho State up 31-16 at intermission.

By halftime there were nearly 600 yards of total offense in the game. The Bengals had 295 and the Vikings had 292.

ISU came out of the locker room on fire again. A 39-yard run by James Madison on the first play was followed by a 41-yard touchdown hookup from Gueller to Michael Dean. Flanagan added a touchdown run at the 8:48 mark and suddenly PSU was down 45-16.

From there the Vikings were unable to make a comeback. Each team tacked on two touchdowns. PSU got a 27-yard TD pass from Eason to Darnell Adams, and Carlos Martin scored on a 13-yard run for his first career touchdown.
In all, Idaho State had 691 yards of offense. Gueller was 14-23 for 327 yards and three touchdowns. Madison (160) and Flanagan (108) led a running game that totaled 364 yards.

Eason completed 19-38 passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Riley had six catches for 71 yards and a score. Petties-Wilson had 82 yards rushing on three carries.

Braxton Winterton had 14 tackles for the Vikings. Kenton Bartlett added 13 stops.

GAME NOTES: True freshman Jalani Eason moved back into the starting quarterback role. He led the Vikings to 477 yards of offense… Redshirt freshman Avery Jones had six tackles and recovered a fumble for the Vikings in his first action of the season… PSU had beaten ISU in six of the last seven meetings, including three straight times at Holt Arena… the Vikings return home next Saturday to host North Dakota at Providence Park.
