Bolston, Rielly Lead Vikings to First League Win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Ashley Bolston and Sidney Reilly led the Vikings to their first Big Sky Conference win of the season, 88-86, over the Sacramento State Hornets Saturday afternoon at The Nest in Sacramento Calif.
 
Bolston put the Vikings up two with 14 seconds left in the game with a free throw. Sacramento State called a timeout to advance the ball. The Vikings did not foul, despite having fouls to give, and fell into their 2-3 zone.
 
Sacramento State's Emily Easom, who transferred from Portland State following the 2014-15 season, put up a potential game-winning three-pointer but it rimmed out with two seconds left. The Hornets got the offensive rebound but the put-back did not get up in time and the Vikings hung on for their first Big Sky Conference win of the season.
 
Portland State (7-8 overall, 1-2 Big Sky) shot a season-high .561 from the floor in the game, going 37-for-66. Sacramento State (4-10, 0-3) was held to just .355 (33-93) from the floor. The Vikings pulled down 49 rebounds in the game compared to 44 by the Hornets.
 
Over the past five games against Sacramento State, all losses, the Vikings have turned the ball over 29.2 times per game, which has led to 39.0 points off turnovers for the Hornets. Saturday, the Vikings turned the ball over 27 times but limited those mistakes to just 23 points.
 
Bolston, a sophomore guard from Medford, Ore., scored a career-high 29 points on a career-high 12 field goals to lead all scorers. She went 12-for-18 from the floor with a three-pointer and 4-for-7 at the line for her fifth 20-point game of the season. She pulled down six rebounds, had six assists, and stole the ball four times.
 
Rielly, a sophomore guard from Everett, Wash., recorded her seventh 20-point game of the year with 25 points, two shy of her career high. She went 10-for-15 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. She went a perfect 3-for-3 at the line and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.
 
Bolston and Rielly accounted for 54 of the team's 88 points. They combined to shoot .667 from the floor, going 22-for-33.
 
Sophomore F Courtney West recorded her first career double-double at Portland State with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She went 6-for-14 from the floor and recorded a career-high five assists. She also tallied three of the Vikings' six blocks in the game.
 
Portland State opened the game on an 8-3 run. The Vikings went up 11-5 after a Rielly three-pointer midway through the opening period. After a 5-0 run, Ashley Torres Negron hit her first shot of the game, a three-pointer, to put the Vikings up 14-10. Sacramento State took its first lead of the game, 18-14, after an 8-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws from Easom.
 
Bolston came back with back-to-back layups to tie the game, 18-18, with 1:06 left in the first. West laid it in with five seconds left in the first to put the Vikings up 20-18 at the end of one. The Vikings ended the quarter on a 6-0 run as the Hornets missed each of their last six attempts.
 
Sacramento State started the second quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Vikings took the lead back at 26-25 before a 9-0 run of three-pointers by the Hornets put them up 34-26, which forced a Portland State timeout.
 
Bolston ended the Hornets' run with six-straight points to pull the Vikings within two at 34-32. After a Sacramento State three-pointer, Bolston came back with her own to make it 37-35.  
 
Sacramento State, like Portland State in the first, ended the second quarter on a run to lead 44-35 at the half. The Hornets ended on a 7-0 run, while the Vikings went scoreless for the final 3:14.
 
Bolston led all players with 15 points in 18 minutes in the first half. She went 6-of-9 from the floor with four rebounds and four assists. She scored 11 of the Vikings' 15 points in the second quarter.
 
Sacramento State went up by 11 with its first basket of the second half. The Vikings were not able to cut into the lead as the teams started to trade baskets. After the Hornets went up by nine at 55-46, a 6-0 run over a span of 1:12 cut the lead to 55-52 with 4:58 left in the third.
 
Rielly extended the run to 9-0 and tied the game at 55-55 with an old-fashioned three-point play. Sacramento State ended the run with back-to-back baskets to go up 59-55. Layups by Rielly and Elizajane Loader tied it once again at 59-59.
 
Rielly gave the Vikings' their first lead of the second half on a layup. She added another basket to put the Vikings up 63-59. The Vikings took the lead on an 8-0 run and had hit each of its last five shots.
 
Sacramento State ended the Portland State run with a jumper before a last-second layup tied the game at 63-63 heading to the fourth.
 
The Hornets opened the fourth with four-straight points before a Bolston jumper made it 67-65.  After a jumper by Sacramento State, the Vikings went on a 10-0 run to retake the lead and go up 75-69.
 
Sacramento State ended the scoring run with a three-pointer from Maranne Johnson. She hit another three-pointer to tie it at 75-75. The Hornets took the lead on a jumper in the paint before a jumper by Bolston on the other end tied it at 77-77.
 
Torres Negron hit a three-pointer from the left corner to make it 80-77. Easom countered with her first three-pointer to tie it. The lead bounced around again before a three-pointer from Rielly put the Vikings up 84-82 with 2:07 remaining.
 
After Sacramento State tied the game at 84-84, Kian McNair hit a huge three-pointer from the right corner to put the Vikings up by three. The Hornets pulled within one with a jumper with :36 seconds left.
 
Bolston was fouled on the other end with :14 seconds left in the game. She hit one of two to put the Vikings up 88-86. Easom had a look to win the game but it bounced out as the Vikings picked up their first league win and their second road win of the year.
 
Sacramento State's Johnson scored a team-high 23 points, going 8-for-22 from the floor and 6-for-15 from three-point range.
 
Portland State ended its eight-game road trip with its win Saturday and will head home to host Northern Arizona and Southern Utah next weekend at the Peter W. Stott Center.
