Vikings Falter in Early Match Against UC Davis

BOISE, Idaho – Following a quick turn around from last night's win over Arizona State, the Vikings were unable to get things going Saturday morning against UC Davis, falling 3-0 in their Boise State Invitational finale in Boise, Idaho.

UC Davis took the match by scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20. The Aggies (6-7 overall) hit .272 for the match, while holding the Vikings (8-4) to a season-low .056 hitting mark.

The Portland State starters struggled out of the gate but the Vikings found some life off the bench. Sophomore OH Jenna Mullen came off the bench and led the Vikings with seven kills and a .462 (7-1-13) hitting mark. It was the first time this season that the Vikings did not have a player with double-figure kills.

The Aggies jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening set. They extended their lead to 21-10 later in the set after an 8-1 run. Portland State strung four points together late but it was not enough, falling 25-16. The second set played out similarly to the first with UC Davis jumping out to an early lead. The Aggies extended their lead to 21-10 before taking the set 25-16.

An 8-0 run got the Vikings' behind again in the third at 14-5. Mullen racked up six of her seven kills in the final frame but it would not be enough as Portland State dropped the third set 25-17.

The Vikings will return home for a week of practice before heading back out on the road to begin Big Sky Conference play next week. The Vikings will open league action on Friday, Sept. 23 at Idaho State. They will play the following day at Weber State. Portland State will play six of its first eight league matches on the road.
