Vikings Roll to 96-69 win over Pioneers

PORTLAND – The Vikings picked up their second exhibition win of the preseason with a 96-69 win over Lewis & Clark College Saturday afternoon at the Peter W. Stott Center.
 
Portland State controlled the game from start to finish, both on the offensive and defensive ends. The Vikings shot .416 from the floor and held Lewis & Clark to a .324 shooting mark.
 
Portland State played all 13 available players in the game and each one scored in the game. Redshirt sophomore G Ashley Bolston's led the Vikings with a game-high 28 points.
 
Bolston, who put up 24 points Thursday night against Western Oregon, went 8-for-14 (.571) from the floor, 5-for-8 (.625) from three-point range, and 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. She pulled down eight rebound and had five assists. She also led the team with three steals.
 
Fellow redshirt sophomore G Sidney Rielly added 22 points in 29 minutes of action. She went 8-for-15 (.533) from the floor, with a pair of three-pointers, and 4-for-4 from at the line. She recorded six rebounds along with a pair of blocks.  
 
Portland State struggled shooting from three-point range in their opening exhibition win against Western Oregon Thursday night, going 3-for-15 (.200). Saturday against Lewis & Clark, the Vikings went 9-for-25 (.360).
 
The Vikings out-rebounded the Pioneers 55-to-40 overall in the game and 18-to-12 on the offensive glass. They scored 28 second chance points and had 38 points in the paint. Portland State took full advantage of the free-throw line, going 23-for-25 (.920).
 
Portland State scored the first seven points of the game to take an early 7-0 lead. Lewis & Clark cut the lead to two after a 5-0 run of its own. A pair of three-pointers from Rielly and Bolston followed by a jumper from freshman F Caroline Wich made it 20-11 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter.
 
A quick 7-0 run pulled the Pioneers within one at 20-19. A trio of free throws by the Vikings late in the quarter gave the Vikings a 23-19 lead heading into the second. Bolston led the Vikings with six points in the quarter with a pair of three-pointers.  
 
Lewis & Clark pulled within one point early in the second quarter before a jumper by Wich and a pair of free throws by Relly made it a five-point game at 31-26. A basket by Rielly pushed the Vikings' lead to seven at 33-26.
 
Back-to-back quick buckets by the Pioneers cut the Vikings' lead to three at 33-30, which forced a Portland State timeout. Bolston came out of the timeout and scored six-straight points to increase the Vikings' lead to nine at 39-30. After a Lewis & Clark free throw, Portland State extended its lead to 46-31 with a 13-1 run.  
 
The Pioneers cut into the lead but a 4-0 run late by the Vikings gave them a 50-36 lead at the half. Rielly led all players with 15 points at the break on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.
 
Portland State started the second half on an 8-0 run, while holding Lewis & Clark scoreless for nearly three and a half minutes, to make it a 22-point game at 58-36. The Vikings made it a 64-40 game on a Rielly's second three-pointer.
 
The Vikings picked it up on the defensive end and held the Pioneers to just 12 points in the third quarter. Portland State led 73-48 heading to the fourth.
 
Portland State was able to go it its bench in the fourth and get everyone valuable minutes heading into the regular season. Junior G Yaremi Mejia came on and scored six points in the fourth, while freshman F Jasmin Falls hit a pair of jumpers in the final minutes. Senior G Ashley Torres Negron hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Vikings their 96-69 win.
 
Portland State opens the regular season this Friday, Nov. 11 at CSUN in Northridge, Calif. The Vikings defeated the Matadors in Portland last season. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. PT.
