PORTLAND
– After taking the first set, the Portland State volleyball team dropped the next three sets to fall, 3-1, to the Portland Pilots Wednesday night at the Peter W. Stott Center.

Portland took the match by scores of 12-25, 25-17, 25-21, and 25-23 to improve to 2-1 on the season. Portland State fell to 0-4.

Freshman outside hitter Eva Linden posted a career-high 16 kills to lead the way for the Vikings. She came one dig shy of her first career double-double, finishing the match with nine.

Junior Pati Anae tallied her second career double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs and was a force to be reckoned with at the service line. She tallied five service aces, three in the first set alone. It was the most aces in a match by a Viking since Cheyne Corrado's seven against Oklahoma last season.

The Vikings easily took the first set 25-12 to go up 1-0 early in the match. Portland State hit a season-high .357 in the set and tallied three blocks and three service aces, all coming from Anae.

With the set tied at 3-3 early in the first, the Vikings went on a 12-2 run to go up 15-5 on a service run by Anae which included all three of her aces in the set. The run also included a pair of blocks. After Anae's service run was broken, the Vikings closed out the set to win 25-12 on a Linden kill. Linden tallied six kills in the set.

Portland State opened the second set with a 5-2 run before Portland took six of the next seven points to go up 8-6. The Vikings scored three straight to retake the lead at 9-8. After the teams traded points to 12-12, the Pilots scored three straight to go up 15-12, which forced the Vikings to take a timeout.

The momentum started to swing from the Vikings to the Pilots who finished out the set to win 25-17 and tie the match at one set apiece. The Vikings tallied just six kills in the second set compared to 16 in the first.

Both teams battled back and forth in the third with the match on the line. The Vikings took a two-point lead at 13-11 before three straight points by the Pilots gave them the 14-13 lead. The teams traded points with neither able to take more than a one-point lead all the way to 19-19. The Pilots got on a service run of their own and scored six of the next eight points to take the third set 25-21.

Portland State again led early in the fourth set and led 7-5. Portland took 12 of the next 14 points to go up 17-9. The Vikings cut the lead to three at 17-14 after five-straight points but the Pilots again took four of the next five points to increase their advantage to 21-15.

The Vikings pulled within two, 21-19, after another four-point run but the Pilots were able to keep their lead and increase it to set point at 24-20. The Pilots served long giving the Vikings a chance at 24-22.

Anae went back to serve as the Vikings forced an attacking error to pull within two. Another Anae ace, her sixth of the match, pulled them within one but the comeback was not meant to be as the Pilots closed out the fourth set 25-23 to take the match 3-1.

The Pilots out-hit the Vikings .215-to-.162 for the match. Portland had a narrow blocks advantage, 11.5-to-11.0 while each team tallied 51 digs.

Portland had three players with double-digit kills led by Hannah Troutman's team-high 15. Katie Sullivan added 13 while Emily Liger added 10.

The Vikings will hit the court twice on Saturday, Oct. 5 with matches against Nevada (11 a.m. PT) and Grand Canyon (7 p.m.).

NOTES: Mikaelyn Sych made her Portland State debut … Pati Anae recorded her second double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs … Eva Linden tallied a career-high 16 kills … Portland State played all 13 players on the roster.
